Wiring harness?
I'm looking for information on these manufactures wiring harnesses as to what's best. I know usually you get what you pay for, but on a budget would either of the top two be up to par with painless or any other high quality product?

Re: Wiring harness?
I have not started rewiring mine yet, but the EZ setup is what I have. I was told by Tim Christian (dealer at the time I bought it from) that they work real well. It is what he used on all his trucks. One of these days I'll start my wiring and the board will know how much I like or un-liked it.

Re: Wiring harness?
I strongly recommend the American Auto Wire harness (P/N 510089 for 69-72 years)
I finished mine a few weeks ago. Took about 20 hours to install the complete harness (engine, dash, front and rear lights). I previously had NO experience with any of this. The kit comes with all connections, several replacement switches (ignition, lights, dimmer, and a few others I think), courtesy lights, etc. Basically everything you need so you won't have to run out to the hardware or parts store every time you realize something is missing from the other kits. Best price I found for the AAW kit when I was shopping them was at RockAuto, but I think I got it during a sale. This one costs a little more than the others, but you'll end up spending more in time and costs for picking up everything else you need with the others in my opinion. |

Re: Wiring harness?
I recommend AAW or M&H. Have used both on different cars with great results.

Re: Wiring harness?
I've installed a painless and EZ wiring harness.
For the money, quality, etc, no doubt I'd go with the EZ wiring harness. A couple of notes on each: Painless: If I remember correctly I had to open up the hole in the firewall where the wiring harness went though. It wasn't an exact fit. Also, the "accessory" circuit didn't power everything that it was supposed to. I don't remember exactly what it did and didn't power. I installed this kit in 2001 and sold the truck in 2008...so its possible they updated the design. EZ wiring: Its more of a universal kit. All of the wires just come out from the back side. For me this was not a big deal since I shaved my firewall, so I just put in a filler piece where the original wiring harness was. All of the wires that go through the firewall now go through the circular hole above where the original wiring harness was located. I think this may be where the original speedo cable goes through. Overall the wiring harness was pretty easy to install. Of course I did this as part of the complete frame off restoration, and I wired up my LS engine at the same time, and I'd already re-wired my other truck. Overall I just don't see any advantages to paying for the painless kit since its not an exact or original harness. I'm planning on installing another EZ wiring harnesss in my 69 when the time comes. |

Re: Wiring harness?
M&H wiring is the best, completely plug it in just like the original ones. Rewire a whole vehicle in 2 to 3 hours.

Re: Wiring harness?
I have used EZ universals on two vehicles now without any issues.... I was able to pick them up both on e- bay for 130 each shipped, might save you some money...

Re: Wiring harness?
I'd go with American Auto Wire, all their harness's are made exactly the way GM made them new but with upgraded wire to handle the load better, I just replaced the A/C harness in my 71 and it went in just fine, their quality is superior to the others and buying direct you'll save a few bucks.

Re: Wiring harness?
I'm happy with Painless so far, but $535 sounds expensive for it.
Here it is at Summit for $387. When I got mine they had a $100 rebate off of that. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PRF-10206/ |
