Ooohh! Look what followed my dad home!
My dad found a motor for my truck today! It's in 94 Z28 with 90k miles! LT1! We start the transplant next week! Has anyone here done this swap before? I have a few questions about some of the parts. How can I use the original cable driven speedo with the 4l60e? Thanks!

My 74 has a LT1 and 4l60e. You have two options with the speedometer, 1) get an electric one. 2) get a new tailhouseing that has been modified. I can't remember where I bought mine but I bet someone will know where you can get one. Basically you put a new gear on the tail of the trans and the modified houseing will have the hookup for your cable. It's not a big deal at all.

Hell, put a new sub frame under it and sell the car whole rather than cuttin it up. Then you could mail order you a crate engine. With big cam, heads, and fun junk. NICE SCORE nonetheless.

I'm going to keep it FI. I've got big plans for this truck. I'm going to try to keep the ABS and AC and all the other goodies that come with it. Is the rear end worth putting under the truck? I know it's no 12 bolt, but are they any good?

I have done this swap, and there are a bunch of things I learned. The biggest obstacle is notching the frame/motor mount for the AC unit. I have lots of pictures if you need them as you go along. If your radiator/condensing coils are good, don't throw them away...they fit nicely...so does the electric fan setup. The only thing I would do differently is to move the engine further back to allow more room between the fans and engine. Without a distributor on the back of the engine, you have room to go back quite a bit.
Don't throw away anything on the car, until you are done. I had to fabricate exhuast flanges, because they don't sell them seperate from the Y-pipe. ($600). Any of the options to run your stock speedo are about $300. An electronic speedo is about $300, but then you have to redo all your guages. I am using the camaro guages in mine.

help with LT1
I just got done building an LT1 in my 1995 Camaro. If you need some help with this project, let me know if there is anything I can do. I have the laptop to program this computer and a good bit of knowledge about the LT1.
I'm also located in South Carolina. I little town called North. Yes, North, South Carolina. Thanks David Moss

Does anyone make brackets to relocate the ac compressor? I've heard of these, but I don't know where to look for them..

The rearends are weak and do not hold up well. It is a 10 bolt with a small ring gear, do not use it. Most of the Camaro guys get rid of them once they start modding. I am sure there is work you can do to make it stronger, but it is not a great rear end IMHO.

That's a shame.. I was hoping to use it for the discs and ABS.. Oh well.. I guess I'll just stick to the 12 bolt in it now. Thanks.

tight
It's also tight in that Camaro!
And keep that 12 bolt rear end in that truck. I think you can take the axles out of a cadilliac eldorado and use them. (not sure what year model) And also take the disc brakes, calapers, and everything else off of this rear end and use it to make you some disc brakes on the back of these trucks. I need to check this out some more though. David Moss

street and peformance makes all of the brackets....
www.hotrodlane.cc You may find that by the time you get the corvette style compressor and brackets (as well as the vette style flywheel pulley, you may want to notch the frame. If you don't have to have air (not an option here), you can get a AC delete pulley.

It's tight in the Camaro/Corvette, but more height-wise than width-wise...so the accessory mounts on LT1s are set up for a VERY wide configuration.
Drop the ABS idea now, it's more trouble than it's worth, IMO. And yeah, the rear is no good for a truck...it doesn't take a whole lot of power plus traction to shatter them in a 3400lb Camaro, let alone a 4000lb truck. A few things to do when you get the engine out of the Camaro, and before you put it in the truck: *New waterpump (go electric if you can) *New/rebuilt OptiSpark *Throttle body coolant bypass (not so much an issue given you're swapping it...just don't run any coolant to the throttle body and cover up the exposed inlets)

Is there an aftermarket replacement for the optispark? I hear they have a lot of problems with moisture. How about the water pump? I know nothing about electric pumps. Can somebody recommend a good one? I already planned on changing the pulgs and wires. They look like a pain in the ass to get to with the motor in the truck!

I don't know exactly what to do to swap an electric water pump in there; I've seen them used all the time, but never an article on what exactly needs to be done.
One thing you could do for the Opti which would take a bit of work (but would also be a great excuse for, say, an LT4 HOT Cam) is convert it to the 1995-later vented Optispark. Thing is, you need at the least a different cam, timing cover, OptiSpark, and water pump...but I know there's articles somewhere on how to do it.

optispark
Go to Camaroz28.com and get info for this engine. There is more there than anywhere else on the web.
Vented opti is the way to go and don't buy direct from a dealer. I'll get you a Phone # to call for it. It is $213. Normally it is over $400. I have the electric water pump. You have to take the old one apart and order the new unit that goes into the existing housing. It is a PITA but it isn't too bad. You can get a new regular water pump from advance (or autozone) for less than $100. If you buy a new cam, don't bother with the Lt4 hot cam. Go bigger. I have the XE 224/230 .503 .510 lsa 112 and I wish I would have went bigger. (I also have 1.6 roller rockers which makes the acutal lift .533 .540) If you want a lot of chop in your sound, go with the magnum series cam, I needed the vacume for power brakes, so I went with the extreme energy series cam in mine. Hope this helps Call if you need some info (803) 247-3209 David Moss

Time for a little update.. Friday, I'm going home to finish pulling the wiring harness out of the camaro, and start on the swap. I'm pretty excited. I can't wait to see the lt1 between the frame rails in that truck! It'll be sweet!
