4spd linkage
I might be picking up a 65 shortbed and will be dropping my 350/4spd into it. I know some of the early trucks had hydraulic clutch linkage but what about the 65`s? Is there a conversion kit available or will I have to piece it together?

Hydraulic clutch, yes 60-61 or 2, 63's definitely mechanical
hydraulic linkage,no 4 speed no linkage,shifter comes right out of the gearbox. sounds like you'll have to piece it together T

I still have to go look at the truck but Im just trying to do a little research on the 4spd stuff. I know the shifter that is for my el camino probably wont work but Im planning on using a late model bench so maybe it will? If not Ill have to get a different shifter.

Mechanical linkage would probably be easier, since all the engineering is factory it would just be a matter of collecting and assembling. If you want to run long tube headers, the hydraulic system becomes more favorable. Captainfab sells a kit to convert to a hydraulic system which could probably be used on a 65:

If mounts the shifter head farther back and higher up and will not clear a bench seat no matter what stick is used. |

Thanks. Ill have to consider that hydraulic set up. Looks like it will be the easiest choice. The shift I have is a comp plus but it doesn`t have the typical 2 bolt mount set up so I can`t just change sticks. I would just have to sell mine and buy another one.

I might be missin somethin.....but my '63 GMC's both have hydraulic clutches as original equipment.
I wouldn't be surprised if that was unique to the GMC side.

Yes the GMC's had the hydraulic clutch from '60-'63 whereas the Chevy's had the hydrauilc clutch from '60-'62.
To the OP. That '65 would have had a mechanical clutch originally, which would make it easy to stay with that type. However, depending on what you want to run for headers or exhaust manifolds, converting to a hydraulic clutch may be easiest. Headers that will work in these trucks with the mechanical clutch linkage, are limited to long tubes.
