Is this a factory tach?

Sorry for the crappy pic, does this tach look original to you guys? The needles on the fuel and speedo are faded more.

Re: Is this a factory tach?

Re: Is this a factory tach?

I believe it is. But the spid should list it if its original.
On second look, it does have different fading. Perhaps aftermarket. Check the spid.

Re: Is this a factory tach?

It looks like a factory tach. Whether it's original to your truck is another question. It would be listed on the SPID.

Question Re: Is this a factory tach?

Looks as though it's a orignal tach for these year trucks. I doubt very seriously if it's orignal unless your truck was a big block and even then it's a guess.
The Spid in my opinion doesn't mean it is orignal either. I have seen extra Spids at shows that can be made to show anything you want on a truck.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Is this a factory tach?

it was common for the tach to not fade like the rest of the needles.
The SPID would tell if the truck came with one, no telling if it is THE original, but it IS an original style for the 10 - 30 series trucks.

Re: Is this a factory tach?

Looks like a factory tach to me. Doesn't matter what engine was in the truck, tachs were available in all of them. I have seen alot of gauge clusters and have noticed the tach faces seem to age different for some reason.

Re: Is this a factory tach?

I agree with the others, it's a factory tach. They do fade differently like that. Something about the manufacturing process/materials must have been different.

Question Re: Is this a factory tach?

Everyone wants a truck with all the nice equipment. I do to and I have all the nice dash stuff even a speed warning buzzer but it's not orignal.

I would say than less than half the trucks out there are orignal tach dashes. People didn't order them back then. I rode in a bunch of them that my dad ordered for people and I don't remeber one of them with a Tach are the speed buzzer. He was the GM Chevy truck sales rep for the Charlotte NC zone office for years and had company trucks all the time.

Here is why I say the spid doesn't mean much now days to me. You can make one read anything you want and make it look old as the truck.
They are for sell all the time on here.

Re: Is this a factory tach?

I think I read that 3% of our bodystyle trucks were ordered w a tach. The same number for manal throttle. Now it seems half of the trucks you see have factory tach. At the midwest all truck nationals I saw 8 black swb 67s I know on was actually born that way. Alot can happen in 40 years enjoy the truck for what it is original or not.

I have twelve factory tach dashes right now and some are faded more than others but most look brighter than the other needles...and the letters tend to darken a lot....the speedo and fuel were screen printed so they stayed more of the light green color longer....the tach, oil, ammeter, and temp tend to darken/get rust on the lettering...

The aftermarket tachs have bright brass looking backs on them while a factory tach is a gray color....so if you can take the dash out or look behind you'll be able to tell...also most aftermarket tachs have more green lettering on them....and I doubt that an aftermarket tach would be that color already....AND...the lense has different lettering if it's aftermarket...SO.....I'd 99.9% confirm the tach above to be factory

Re: Is this a factory tach?

. . . .

Here are three 1970 SPIDS with tachs . . .

The first is a replacement with the wrong font . . .

The second looks original . . .

The third is mine, made with the correct font by "Chipflyer" - a member of this forum.

Cool Re: Is this a factory tach?

screamin_c10,
I hope it is a factory tach. I didn't mean to get a scandle going just put info out that just because your truck are anyone elses has a Tach in it doesn't mean it came with it. Even if the SPID looks correct.

Hope you enjoy the truck. Heck mine doesn't hav anything stock in it now since I took mine out.
My dash came out of a Dump truck with the tach and air gauge. That air gauge was thrown away 20 odd years ago.
