grille mod i thought i'd share

Something i'd been thinking about that is just a small detail, but i like the way it turned out. The purists may scoff but i like LED's. You know how on a 67-68 grille the bottom opening had the indentations for the stock rectangular turn signal? Well, i took another TOP 67 grille opening piece off another grill, by drilling the rivets and did the same on my 67 grille on the bottom, removing the bottom one. Well, the holes top to bottom are different but no biggie, i re-drilled holes and used some threaded rivets to attach the old top piece to the bottom. took just a few minutes. I fitted some Harley amber LED's to the part and they are really bright with a running light mode and a brighter turn signal, sorry i don't have them wired to show the brightness yet. Then i powdercoated all the core support & grille. My grille trim and headlight bezels were cherry and are being re-chromed right now. Bumper is junk but i'll use it for a minute until i get a smoothie one from Brothers.
here is a pic or two:

tell me what you think

Re: grille mod i thought i'd share

any time you can create better lighting visibility and also do a tasteful mod at the same time is a great thing.

Different- I like it. It'll be an even better compliment to the round headlights- once they are installed.

Re: grille mod i thought i'd share

they are BRIGHT amber when lit...i MAY have an amber lens to go in it. I'm also going to be a smartass and install H-D 7" halogen headlights just cause i can...they have a LITTLE bar & shield in the center, you probably wont even notice it...

this was so easy i was really, really surprised no one had thought of this, er, at least i've never seen it before. Looking back at my old magazines, the Fesler Built red 67 has these indentations when they shaved the turnsignals and DIDN'T smooth it out. Don't get me wrong, i am in no where or no how comparing my POS truck to that, but i'm just saying it's the little details that add up to big things when done. My Harley Road King has a ton of little things that make people scratch their head...
I'm a good visualizer & designer but i'm not a welder or fabricator, i really envy you guys who build & fab the trick detail parts and goodies. I can paint, pinstripe, letter and layout flames & graphics pretty well, but the welding/fab i have to rely on my buddies.
My truck is going to get painted semi-gloss black with some candy flake flames on the hood and doors. I'm going to first layout one set of flames to be a reverse set so i don't have to flame the leading hood/fender edge or the grille.
I also hope to get a set of Eagle Alloys 20 x 8.5 and 20x10 wheels in the future:
http://aewheel.com/wheels_detail_specs.cfm?id=453
Truck needs some serious love....

Re: grille mod i thought i'd share

yeah everybody has the Boss 5 spokes with the grey centers (including my next door neighbor) and i don't wanna copy him...so i found these, which are a sister company to the Boss Wheels (all under Eagle Wheel Corp). Also lucky that they are about 8 miles away...
I havent decided black or silver yet, but i'll figure that out when i have $$$ in hand.

yeah, who woulda thunk an 1800 sq ft shop would be too small? You accumulate a lotta crap in 15 years.

I've been rolling it out past the door...my harley project is almost done and it'll be out of that way soon. Somebody come buy the 71-72 front clip, that'll make more room!!! lol

Re: grille mod i thought i'd share

I like it, but there size looks somewhat out of place.. wonder what it look like in the bumper, and a little bigger.. the smallness just doesn't flow...
but if you like, it don't matter what others think..
bet on a 71 you could install them resessed and they'd be almost hidden..

haha on the '95 comment about the wheels tho... with wax pencil flames from the 50's.. lol

i like them, i've been holding these LED lights for years just for this use, from an older Harley project i never used them on, they dont need to be bigger cause they are REALLY REALLY BRIGHT, they have a running light and turn signal mode. I don't really want them to stand out tons anyway. It will look better when i get whatever headlight i'm going to use in there too. I may put a dual halogen style bulb in it like my harley has, just to be different.

The wax pencil is just my design "scribbles" tuning up my basic flame layout for the truck....its gonna be pretty LOUD. Folks are going to either love it or hate it. I wanna have the truck done for the Grand National Roadster Show in Jan for the Suede Palace area....

If i have to wait on it from Brothers, i will check out Top Banana. There is an advantage logistically (no shipping) getting it from brothers as i'm about 25 mins from them....and Truck Shop. I'm going today to pick up a re-pop smooth tailgate from TS in Orange, along with some other needed goodies.

thanks, and yes, Corner of Brooks & Mountain, right down the street from Total Cost Involved. Haven't figured out tire size yet but this is the wheel i want to use...
here are the wheels:
http://www.aewheel.com/wheels_detail_specs.cfm?id=453
20x10 and 20x8.5 in black

Now if only i can get my air ride installed, my powdercoated 12 bolt and talk to Rob @ No Limit about what chassis mods to make....
