Question Exterior Door Handle Gasket Question

I tried using the reproduction exterior gaskets (couldn't find NOS) and they are way to thick, they squeeze out around the handles and look terrible. Has anybody come up with a better alternative?

Re: Exterior Door Handle Gasket Question

Is it the small or large one you're having trouble with? I put new handles on a '71 and had no trouble. I'm getting ready to put some on a '72 and would like to know about issues.

Re: Exterior Door Handle Gasket Question

Sean,
I had the same problem on mine. I had purchased the mirrors and door handles from Brothers and I contacted them. They sent me out some new "rubber" that worked a lot better. You might try contacting them.

Re: Exterior Door Handle Gasket Question

With people paying $85.00 a pair on E-Bay you will see a lot pop up there! I don't know if that is crazy or stupid! They are some made of rubber and some out of a paper/fiber board type of material. I always liked them better than rubber

Re: Exterior Door Handle Gasket Question

I have bought some NOS gaskets for my repop handles and they had to be trimmed. The repop rubber gaskets squeeze out and dry rot in a year. If I had to do it over I would buy some gasket material and make my own.

MacGyver72
Where did you get the ones you used?
The ones I bought have three pieces per side, all made of the same material. The one for the door lock key cant be used, not possible to get the plate on the inside of the door that holds the lock in place on because the place it locks through cant even pass through the door. Both the small and large gaskets for the handle do the same thing, bulge out about an eighth of an inch or more all the way around if the handle is tightened even a little.

Re: Exterior Door Handle Gasket Question

I put some on that came with my new Chinese repro handles and they cracked within the first week! They looked good in the box.

I sed a kit from Classic parts Page 20 PT# 18-167 comes with door handle gaskets and lock gaskets fit great on my 1970.

Re: Exterior Door Handle Gasket Question

Hello Sean. I only used the 72 because someone else had my nickname already on the forum. Just call me MacGyver. My truck is a 72. So anyway, my son had a 71 a couple of years ago and had to put on new door handles. I think they came from LMC but I don't know that for sure. That's where I was going to get them from. As I recall the large gasket for the rear of the door handle had a lip all the way around that the handle nested in. the gasket itself was more of a hard plastic than a gasket really but I never seemed to get any water in the door so I guess it sealed OK.

Re: Exterior Door Handle Gasket Question

Update: Made some of my own and they came out pretty good but a little rough, trying to cut something that small and thin is a PITA!

Got some NOS, very nice and stick right on so it's a not brainer, duh... NOS. But just before I got the NOS parts I had added some to an order with Classic Parts which showed up so I compared the repro's. Fitment wise they were better than the NOS so I through those on to see how long they will last. We'll save the NOS for later or throw them on ebay for a $1000 (hey, you never know) to help pay for my new motor.
