starter problems on 72 swb 4x4
I've been experiencing "dead spot" problems with the starters (NAPA) I've installed in my 72 chev. I purchased a Mean Green starter, but before I install that, I wanted to see if anyone else out there has had similar starter problems. I don't want to overlook anything before I put the new starter in.

If you have headers I would for sure invest in a heat wrap. I would use up a starter a year before I put a wrap on it and now havent had any problems.

Be sure you have a good ground. A loose ground will also cause starter problems. Voice of experience.

jayrau, it is interesting to hear that you have been having starter problems with NAPA starters. I am on my second one in 5 months and it is having problems now as well. I am not running headers and I have the proper heat shield on it too. I thought that NAPA had would have decent starters. Someone posted once that they had continual starter problems until they finally went to the dealer and bought a new GM starter. I am at about that point myself.

I've had problems with several Napa starters in the past as well. The last time I had a problem with the starter on my truck, it was from oil/grease between the starter and the block causing me to loose my ground. My convertible has this "dead spot" with it's starter too, it's nearly new and has been that way since the day I put it on.......it's a Napa starter and there is no grease between the starter and the block.

I installed hedman headers several years ago, hence have gone through a starter per year since. The mean green starter is supposed to be able to handle the heat, find out pretty soon anyhow. I'll post a picture of my ride, it is an original 72 fleetside shorty.
