aftermarket wiring harness for my 56 GMC
I'm in the middle of restoring my 56 GMC long step & thinking is it worth replacing the wiring harness? Some of the wiring has gone crusty & just curious if some of the members here have had anything to do with the harness's sold by some of the major vendors??

Auto Wire best money can buy, if they have one for your car or truck... Painless is not painless but good...

Re: aftermarket wiring harness for my 56 GMC
I used a Painless system and had no problems. Just need to take your time and follow directions. They have good customer support if you have any questions. It was my first time wiring anything and everything worked when I was done.

Re: aftermarket wiring harness for my 56 GMC
I bought a "Its A Snap" harness for $125 on ebay. 21 circuit universal. It has a tiny fuse box that uses mini fuses that saves space and each wire is labeled about every two foot on the wire which circuit it is. You can't mess it up...the painless harness I saw had stickers at the very end of the wires and a enormous fuse block.

Re: aftermarket wiring harness for my 56 GMC
I used a Rebel 9+3 circuit harness in my 49. Instructions could have been better, but it was my first time wiring anything and everything works. I would defiantly use it again.

Re: aftermarket wiring harness for my 56 GMC
I'm in the middle of an EZ-Wire 21 ckt installation now in my 57. Good quality and all of the wires are labeled. I think it's a good deal for the money.

Re: aftermarket wiring harness for my 56 GMC
I've done several wiring jobs with various kits (currently doing a 67 firebird for a buddy using a rebel kit) and find that their all about the same with a few exceptions, the biggest consideration is how many circuts you need. if your running just the bare bones with very little extras the basic kits are good, less expensive and do a decent job of expaining how to hook them up.
If you have a fair bit of experience with wiring, a basic kit is great and gives you a head start vs building your own. If you have every aftermarket power option you can find the more circuts the better, it saves you from having to split power to various items, the more separate runs the easier it is to trouble shoot down the road and gives you the option of adding stuff later. I'd say quality from one reletivly well known manufaturer to the next is all about the same, lets face it, very few of the companys make their own stuff, some do, but in general they buy parts in bulk, assemble and lable the wires and ship them off with genaric instructions for many different applications. Rarely do I find model specific instructions. The biggest difference I've found is in the instructions and cutomer service, I'd suggest visiting their sites and get a feel for what kind of support you can expect down the road or if they have links that explain how to use/ adapt their kit for your application and options. |

Re: aftermarket wiring harness for my 56 GMC
Thanks so far for everyone's reply's & recommendations, now I have plenty of options but to put it simply I'm not a man that indulges in luxury, the only extra's I will have are Alternator, HEI & electric choke.
