distributor question
On my 84 suburban, I was having ignition trouble and took it to a shop for repair. Was told my p-up coil went out and they installed a rebuilt distributor in it. What they installed in it was a distributor without a vacuum advance. They told me I didn't need it unless I was planning to race it. Ever since, the trk has been running rough at idle and when I am stopped. It runs rough until I start gaining speed. Should I just go ahead and put a distributor with a vacuum advance back in it???

didnt need it unless you were going to race it? LOL that's a new one to me. i always thought you did need it, unless you were going to race it. i would take the truck back to them, and have them put the RIGHT part in, if it came from the factory with vac advance, it should have vac advance, period. i wouldnt let them get away with it.

I don't run the advance on mine. The only thing it would do for me is give me a little better gas mileage and help me around town. I'll hook it up one of these days. As far as I know if you were racing it, then the advance would be useless. It would never have a chance to advance for one and wouldn't make a difference on the track even if it did. I agree with Jeremy, I'd take it back to them and tell them you want it put back right. That advance is gonna help your around town driving and your gas mileage.

I dont think i would be wanting that mechanic around my vehicle. vacuum advance is needed. get it put on have your engine timed with it off and carb vacuum for the advance plugged retime and hook the hose up. you will notice a big difference.

When I got my ride, it was the same way.
Messed up but sounded good. Had to do a lot to it. Vacuum lines, dist adjust, everything seemed out of place. The guy I bought if from had everything farmed out and thought he got a good job.
