Unhappy No truetrac / 3.42 combo! What now?

Truetrac does not offer in a 3.42 carrier. 3.73 up is all.

Hesitant of 3.73's due to 80% highway driving

Hesitant of a posi as the locker in it is broke now

468, th400 and 29x20x15 mickeys.

What to do?

www.auburngear.com

Your old posi probably broke from improper maintenance. But,the Auburn is a stouter design I think.

No idea but it is not a posi. It is a locker. It has little pins on springs and one of the pins snapped. It's been broke since I've owned the truck. Locked up solid as the piece is stuck in there.

This is for a 12-bolt 30 spine? I found a listing for 3.73-down carrier:

What you have now sounds like a Gov-lock. They are famous for breaking because they use centrifugal weights to engage, or lock.

I would run an Eaton LSD. They're very durable and rebuildable. The Auburn LSD's are great units, but they're not rebuildable

Re: No truetrac / 3.42 combo! What now?

I'm wondering if 3.73's will be too much but I am leaning that way to get the true trac.

Oh yea, the busted LSD is a powertrax. One of the pins is jammed in there.

Give DTS a call they will get you you need plus more and at a fair price.
browse through the web site. they even carry the x-tra thick gears for different series carriers to fit each other. example 3.08 gear fit series 4 carrier.

Re: No truetrac / 3.42 combo! What now?

I had a 3.73 gear with 28" and 29" tires. It was ok, but trying to drive 70mph on the interstate wasn't alot of fun. I finally switched to a 3.07 this spring. I lost some bottom end, but it's great to be able to drive in the fast lane with other traffic. I personally wouldn't go 3.73's if you do alot of highway driving. Unless, of course, you don't mind staying at 60 in the slow lane the whole time.

I agree, I called DTS a while ago asking for a quote on a 12 bolt with Tru-Trac and 3:42's and the saddles ready to bolt in. They quoted me 2600.00 & shipping with 30/31 ( I can't remember which) spline axles.

Wondering what type of rpm's you were seeing. I've rsn the numbers and I am using a calculator stating 3500 at 80. Doesn't seem to bad As I'm probably not even getting positive lock up at 80 now with 3.08's and a 3k stall. Tires measure 28.5"

Powertrax is far from the strongest locker out there. Most cases a different area of a 12 bolt will give up before a Eaton posi will..

Re: No truetrac / 3.42 combo! What now?

If you go a little taller on your tires it will drop ratio a bit. when you need new tires of course. I am running 373's in my Jeep with 33's does good on highway. Went with 373's in My 70 GMC4x4 with 33's also.

In the process of doing a little research, and came across your thread. I was interested in how you like your decision on the 3.73 gears/Tru Trac?

Thanks.

I probably will go with that as well, my tires are 28.5" tall, and will probably be just over 3K @ 70-75.

Thanks
