What is the best IFS kit for a 55 2nd series?
I am thinking of getting back on my 55 2nd series and paln to go with an IFS. This is somewhat of a "budget build", so money IS an object. Does anyone hve any personal experience with a particular set up? I have looked at TCI, Fatman but would like some personal input.

Mustang II seems to set them the lowest, and have the most parts available. I personally have a Pacer front with a T-Bird rack under mine. Pretty cheap and easy. Stay away from the AMC rack, though.

I have narrowed it down to using a Mustang II set up. I just haven't decided which company to go to with for the truck specific swap kit.

Re: What is the best IFS kit for a 55 2nd series?
I have a TCI mustang 2 in my project. I have installed Heidts, TCI and they are both nice units. I do think the Scotts, No limit, Heidts Superride and the TCI higher end IFS is a step up from your standard mustang 2. I like the upper a-arm design better but I just could not justify the price increase with my budget, but they are very nice units.
If you are going with a mustang 2 unit Heidts or TCI are nice units. I've installed them both and have not had any issues. I have not use Fatman so I can't speak on them, but its a guy on another forum I belong to who love them. Last edited by Kabwe; 11-17-2011 at 08:16 PM. |

Re: What is the best IFS kit for a 55 2nd series?
Do a few searches for some detailed installs, but in my opinion, you touched on one point... budget. I installed a 1978 Camaro/Firebird Subframe. I spend $100 on the subframe, maybe $250? (cant remember - 7 years ago) on new bushings and ball joints... and a weekend of welding and I was done. The MII kits usually START at $1000 I dont know the cost of them now, but 10 years ago I couldn't afford the swap.
if your on a tight budget, then I would highly recommend a donor subframe swap. I know that these later aftermarket units are good quality products... but i still just dont feel good about the idea of having "Mustang II suspension"... probably psychological but the weight and torque of my 400ci pontiac would probably not handle a cheaper MII Kit. |

I put a TCI MII in my truck it was easy to put in. Just make sure you measure and keep measuring to make sure it is square.

The MII front ends ares only based on the geometry of a mustang II.
They are engineered for the weight of the truck.

Re: What is the best IFS kit for a 55 2nd series?
This is true, but people still say that about the MII all the time and I've learned its a waste of time to debate them. I guess it comes from the time that people use to put the car Mustang 2 suspensions under their cars so they hear Mustang 2 and think its the same thing. Even some of the manufactures play into it with ours is not like theirs crap.lol Whatever.lol

Re: What is the best IFS kit for a 55 2nd series?
Just to set the record straight, our Wide Ride is not based on M-II designs or components. We use a custom made Impalla-clone spindle, that uses GM O.E.type 12" brakes, and is a taller spindle. Steering arm is configured to have perfect akreman at 112" wheel base. We use a late t-bird rack, and a 5" stroke coil-over is standard. Just remember to compare apples to apples.

Re: What is the best IFS kit for a 55 2nd series?
no im not saying you did it wrong im just saying some parts are better made than others like building anything you use best materials you can or can afford there are differnt levels to the car building also but a mustang 11 copy vs custom design and built setup is totally differnt both acheive better than 1950s handling but its what ever you want to use but if it were mine i go no limit all the way ... that being said if i had a trailer queen i was to use as show with mirrors and chrome id go art morrison but i cant afford art frame on a daily driver its simple as this do and buy and build as you wish like wideside72 said its a budget build so depending on his budget really

Re: What is the best IFS kit for a 55 2nd series?
Man I know you didn't mean it that way I was just pushing buttons.lol
I just don't like how people get into a my thing is bigger than yours game.lol They all work and there will always be something nicer but that does not make one right and the other one wrong. Camaro Clips, Monte Carlos, Nova Clips all work fine and in the right hands can be installed beautifully. Mustang 2 work fine also, are they the nicest unit available NOPE, but that does not make them a wrong choice either. There is always something nicer. Just like there is always a nicer car or a nicer build. My advice to any home builder is to build what you like, and build it however you want. There is no right and wrong, and just because you don't have 2500-3000 for a IFS doesn't mean you can't be happy with another choice. BTW I've seen your build its a beauty and it speaks for itself. Re: What is the best IFS kit for a 55 2nd series?
I recently had a conversation about putting IFS on my truck with a local builder. Him and his son stared doing MII's years ago and evolved in doing kits. He claims to have installed 120 set ups. Anyway i asked what "kit" he thought was the best out of the ones he installed. His response was "heidts is the prettiest, but no limit is the best in every other way".
FWIW. i plan on going that route, ill just have to sell off a truck or two to pay for it. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: What is the best IFS kit for a 55 2nd series?
I have a Fatman stage 2 frontend in my 57. It's been in for about 12 years, maybe longer ??? I haven't had any problems with it other than it has squeeked since day one. Another thing that bugs me (rattles my old bones) is that everyone that builds after market suspension kits , front or rear uses poly or urathane type bushings. I think it would be great if someone built kits with rubber bushings for us old guys. If I did my frontend again I would go with a Camaro clip (rubber bushings).
Rob if you read this, do you have any thoughts on suspension kits with rubber bushings |
