headliner trim

My truck has a headliner, the trim is all there in nice shape, but it seems to be a cheap plastic. Were they originally plastic?

Re: headliner trim

Yep. There are slots cut into the inner roof panel that the tabs snap into. I haven't been able to remove one yet that didn't break. Leave it up there unless you wan't to buy a new set.
You can see the slots in this pic...the black is heat absorbent paint.

Question, are those slots shown in the picture the only ones? Or are there slots cut all the way around the trim

Re: headliner trim

Would you be able to break off the tabs and use just the screws to hold up the trim?

Re: headliner trim

I doubt it. It's so skinny it will warp and bend between the screws. On top of that they are usually so brittle that they crack around the screws as well as the tabs breaking off.

Re: headliner trim

You could drill small holes in the black band on the trim and small holes in the cab roof, then use very small trim screws with the heads painted black to hold it up. It would still be somewhat noticable but honestly who really looks up at the headliner that much anyway? Just an idea. Joseph

Re: headliner trim

I was going to ask how to remove these without breaking the tabs but I got my answer.

I can attest to the fact that using only screws, the trim will sag and warp.

Put these on the "worst" list for our trucks.

Anyone ever retrofit some metal ones from an old Ford?

I was wanting to add a headliner ( and it doesn't have one from the factory ) to my truck but after reading this post I guess I won't.

There is no black accent on these. They are all chrome. You would have to be careful to avoid drilling holes where the slots are, also. It may work using stainless or chrome screws and finish washers.

I don't know that the reproduced headliner trim is any different from OEM as far as cracking when removing goes.

Same, I have heard that liquid nails will hold up the headliner without trim, its just getting the trim to stay up that's the hard part

When I've been looking at the headliner trim I always thought they were metal and if you screwd the trim into the roof it wouldn't sag, but plastic is another story.

You are correct special-k, i just went out and looked at the headliner in my truck, no black stripe. I guess it proves the last half of my reply, how much do people really look up at the headliner! You could still use very small pan head screws and counter sink the holes in the trim so the screws would be flush. You could use industrial adhesive but i would worry about it eventually loosening up [hot and cold temp extremes]. Plus if you ever had to take it apart again its going to tear some stuff up. Joseph

Re: headliner trim

Ok two big questions here, 1 is there a difference between a headliner cab and a non-headliner cab! And 2 does the trim hold up the headliner or is it simply decoration?

Whoops that should have been a "?" After cab, not an exclamation point, ur laptop being worked on these days and relying on a cell phone is like having ur truck overheat and relying on a pinto to pull up a stump

Re: headliner trim

From the factory, the headliner is glued into place.
The only difference between a headliner truck and a non headliner truck is the slots and screw hopes in the sheet metal for the trim.
I have one in my longhorn, did not come with one. I used liquid nails and no trim. Been up there with no trim since '04 and it is still looking good. When i get my new cab i will do the same thing.

Re: headliner trim

Any pointers on which brand adhesive would work the best? Also is there a decent rattle can product that would redo the chrome for the trim pieces? I know you can get plastic re-chromed but that would cost more then the trim is worth.
