Re: Mech tach pics for PT'S 70 CST

Just to add some info for you guys since there is some interest in the diesel tachs again here, all of the originals i have seen have a 3200 rpm redline if they have a vacuum gauge. If no vacuum, they have a 2800 redline. You will notice that this one and the one w314speed pictured are different redlines. I have never seen one with an air gauge.

Great looking setup mark!

My needle is straight, it comes very close to the face at the tip, it looks exactly like a speedo needle.

Wow. I didn't catch that, I guess being rare and never had another one to compare side by side I did not know there were more than one version.

Eric, Darn you!! Now I have to go find the "correct" tach for my mech tach/vac cluster as i have the 2800 rpm version

Re: Mech tach pics for PT'S 70 CST

Guys I worked 12's last night and am going to hit the bed. I have to pull 12's for three more nights. I will try and post a pic of this very odd needle that is slightly curled at the tip. It looks as if it was done to clear the tach face plate. I have had other diesel tachs and those needles were straight also. Eric this is the dash that you sold to member cpterav8r and I am trying to get it restored for him. It is the one that had the broken lens.

As i say, the ones i have seen. I do not know if one is correct or not. I have had quite a few and seen others and that was just a pattern i noticed.
That is good info to show that it could come either way.
Now mark can forgive me...

Whew!! your forgiven.. thanks Les!! I can rest easier,
Funny thing that all of a sudden mech tach info is popping up.. In all the years and as many trucks that have crossed my path I have never run across a diesel truck or tach and had to "build" this one

Here is a pic of the curled tip diesel tach needle. This is a factory perfect bend. Anyone ever seen one like this. There is no way anyone could have bent this themselves because it is a perfect bend.

Paul, that looks like the way they all should be because mine comes so close to hitting the edge of the tach face

Re: Mech tach pics for PT'S 70 CST

I know it does look to be correct and it looks like that may be why they did it. I wonder if the factory used straight needles and had trouble with them then went to this needle instead. I have only had two other diesel tachs so I cannot remember what the needles were like on the others.

Re: Mech tach pics for PT'S 70 CST

Les I also wonder if this is why you see most of the diesel tach face plates bent at the screw holes like they are over torqued to gain clearance for the needle. Just about everyone that I know that has a diesel tach said the the face has bent marks at the mounting screw holes. The face plate to this tach is the same way, it has indention marks to.

Re: Mech tach pics for PT'S 70 CST

Livrat, can or will you get more lenses made up? I'd like another 4k for mine as mine is kind of scuffed up. And my needle is not bent near the end and is a 3200 red line.

Were you still going to post the pic of the new lens you got made? I'm just curious to see a shiny one.
