Faria tachometer
Hi
My father in law gave me an older Faria tachometer the other day and I thought I would put it in my truck for the hell of it. I took the back off and it says to wire the tach into the wire going from the ignition switch to the coil. In essence, wire the tach between the switch and hot wire of the coil............ I have an HEI in this truck,,,,,,,,, think it will work ? I would hate to mess up this nice old tach. Thanks for any and all help or input on this !!! Tom |

Re: Faria tachometer
With HEI you will run a wire from the dizzy to sender terminal on tach, ignition wire and ground.Make sure its an 8 cyl tach{if thats what you have}or some tachs hace a cylinder# adjustment on the back. There is a terminal on the driver/underside of the dist. marked tach.

Re: Faria tachometer
That was my first tach back in 1969. I have not heard of them in years

Re: Faria tachometer
Connect the tach wire to the terminal labeled "Tach" on the HEI. It should work just fine. Even if it is not an 8 cyl tach it won't hurt it to hook it up. It will just read the wrong RPM. Typically there is a method to configure it for 4, 6, or 8 cyl. It may be a switch or it may require snipping some small wires. Faria is better known in the boat industry. They make marine gauges. They are still around. You can check their website FAQ and support section or call their tech support if you have any questions on installation.

Re: Faria tachometer
This tach only has 2 terminals on it and inside it reads "Connect in series with ignition switch so coil current flows thru tach. Read instruction sheet. Gaurantee void if connected to distributor or ground. or if case is opened
The diagram inside shows the tach connected in series between the switch and the + side of the coil. I tried to get some pics but can't find the good camera with a closeup option. Do you still think it will work hooked up as it states with the HEI? Thanks for the replies !! Also,, there are no switches or wires to be seen when you take the back off,,just 2 terminals that have no markings, and a socket for the light bulb. I'm guessing this tach is from the early to mid sixties. I checked out the links provided for Faria but did not find anything for there "older" tachometers. Re: Faria tachometer
I am fairly certain the wire that is supposed to go to the + side of coil can go to the tach terminal on the HEI.You could make a jumper for both terminals on the tach but where does it get its ground?

Re: Faria tachometer
Found the camera !
http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/a...tachometer.jpg http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/a...hometer003.jpg http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/a...hometer005.jpg The light socket only has 1 wire so it has to be grounding through the mount. It has the standard chrome cup mount,, altho the terminals run through insulated grommets on the mount cup. |
