Re: hid's in our trucks
I've always preached that HID's in housings made for filament bulbs are terrible, and last night I had a good reminder of why I'm so against drop in HID's. One of my friends was given a set of drop in HID's for Christmas and he installed them in his Acura. He showed them to me last night (all giddy that they're so much "brighter") and I'll have to say that they were HORRIBLE!!! They were low beam only (the ballast can't cycle on/off quick enough nor reliably enough) and they put out the worst beam pattern I've ever seen! VERY splotchy, with dim and hot spots, and zero cut off on low beam, just like a normal high beam. They were shining up into trees and overhead road signs like crazy. They also had zero down road visibility, due to all of the foreground lighting and zero control of the beam pattern to shine more light straight ahead. I followed him in my car that has 7" Cibie Z Beam headlights, 80/100 watt Hella H4 bulbs, and a 10g relay harness, and I noticed when topping a hill (the beam pattern was shining up) that my low beams had more long distance range than his super-duper HID's. On my way home he got behind me, about a 1/4 mile back, and I had to tilt my rear veiw mirror to keep from being blinded by the excessive glare.
HID's in a housing made for filament bulbs are a bad idea, and DO NOT improve lighting performance. If you want HID's, buy a complete OEM kit from a wrecked BMW or Honda S2K, or Acura with projectors and high/low beam capabilities and retrofit them into your car/truck. This is the ONLY proper way to have upgraded, useable HID lights that don't blind oncoming traffic. HID's are so bright that they have to have a very controlled low beam pattern or else they'll have excessive glare. If the low beam pattern doesn't look like this, you'll be blinding oncoming traffic.

Re: hid's in our trucks
I agree. The link I posted in the thread I posted showed where to get 7" housings made for hid

Re: hid's in our trucks
The Xenarc lights are nice, but for the price you could make atleast two or three sets yourself. OEM projectors and ballast can be fit in clear lens 7" housings, and there are places that have projector bezels to hide the cut in the reflector to fit the projector. The biggest issue with doing it that way is the added depth though, and the Xenarcs may have fixed that issue.

Re: hid's in our trucks
the xenarcs have both a high and low beam, something that would double or triple the price of making it yourself for bi-xenon setups. unless you were happy with only the low beam, or used a second set of lights mounted elsewhere for highs.

Re: hid's in our trucks
OEM bi-xenon projectors have a flap to cover half of the lens to create the low beam cutoff. A solenoid moves the flap to make the high beam pattern. Retrofitting high/low beam projectors wouldn't increase the cost since you wouldn't be buying anything extra, it's all built in together in the same projector.

Re: hid's in our trucks
yeah I know how they work, thanks for the recap. buying the bi-xenon setup costs more than the single low projector is what I was saying. although looking at ebay prices have come down quite a bit.
