relocating fuel tank /fuel filler

I will be relocating my fuel tank to the rear of my truck in the near future and was woundering what people are using. Also I want to install a fuel filler door and not have the fill on the bed floor. please feel free to post photos parts used. I for got to mention my truck is a 69c10 long bed and also currently doing an ls conversion so the fuel pump will need to be in the tank. looking for ideas thanks. I am new to this site and it is awesome.

Re: relocating fuel tank /fuel filler

you might be able to use a blazer tank. My current plan is to use a plastic fuel cell under floor but the blazer tank would be better to get the filler off the bed floor, Most of the LS swaps i've seen on here don't use an internal fuel pump but an external frame rail mounted fuel pump from what i've seen. Also alot of people have used custom made aluminum fuel cells for ground clearance as the blazer tank may hang down a little (idk if your lowering bagging it) They can be made to accept a factory sender/pump unit or external with the filler neck wherever you want. I think one vendor on here is named "fuelcellguy" ?? not sure if thats the right name but he makes some dang nice custom fuel cells and I want one !!

Re: relocating fuel tank /fuel filler

I am using a Walbro GSL392 Universal Inline 255LPH Fuel Pump and Kit (Ebay $100 shipped)

I just snagged this quote from mcbassin, his build thread is at

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=354738

That is what Iv'e seen most using anyway. He has a truck 4.8L LS motor but the fuel demands are similar.

Re: relocating fuel tank /fuel filler

My truck is already lowerde 4/6 and i will be starting with the in cab fuel tank. Already going to be using a walbro external pump corvette filter/regulator but will up grade later. Also don't want the tank to hang low. Trying to find the post where someone put the filler behind the rear light and maybe the side marker light thanks

The square body 87-91 Blazer & Suburban EFI tank fits and can work really well.

For the fuel door you can run the 88-98 Chevy truck fuel filler door. The curve of the door fit the curve of our quarter panels and the shape looks right too.

Re: relocating fuel tank /fuel filler

I put mine behind the marker light, I've also heard of a liscence plate fill full size GM car tank used, and....filled behind the rear plate.

Re: relocating fuel tank /fuel filler

Check my build thread. Mine is behind the left taillamp, I have the ECE 4/6 drop and a 70 blazer metal tank. Hangs a little low, but no problems so far.

Re: relocating fuel tank /fuel filler

I like the idea of the filler behind the tail light. It is like the 56 & 57 Chevy's, which I thought was a cool feature back in the day.

Boyd Welding tanks is an option as well, and we have Free Shipping this month on them. They can be built for a carb of EFI application and fits in between the frame rails and appx. 19 gallons.

Re: relocating fuel tank /fuel filler

I have a Boyd Welding tank, fits great. They do a really good job. I tried a marker light filler but it did not work very good, filled too slow so I switched it to the bed floor.

Re: relocating fuel tank /fuel filler

I just roughed in my fuel filler door in the drivers side of my bed. I really wanted the filler behind the drivers tail light but here in Oregon we cannot pump our own gas. Didn't want all that hard work getting hammered by...well you know. I found a late 80's suburban for a donor door and filler neck. It all worked out perfectly. The filler hose and even the vent hose are the right length and size. The rough in only took about and hour.

Re: relocating fuel tank /fuel filler

Great info everyone. I'm working on a 58 Apache that now has a 5.0L TPI engine and a 700R4 Tranny. I really want my fuel tank under the bed and it has to be a side fill. I have a fuel tank from a 2003 Blazer. The tank does not fit between the rails because it is 33 inches wide. the measurements betweem the rail walls is 33 and a half. Any good suggestion on how to move forward on this one.
