Electric vs Manual Fuel Pumps

So I'm planning on putting a fuel cell in my truck one of these days and was curious about the fuel pump options. Do I have to run an electric pump or can I use the normal pump on the engine block?

And which is better and why?

You can use a "regular" pump on a fuel cell.

If your pickup is just a driver, maybe a once in a while quarter mile pass, the mechanical pump, is simple, and will work fine.

Eletrical pumps serve a good purpose when needed in higher performance applications. I like things simple, every chance I get.

Yep i yanked the electric pump out of my truck and put a mechanical back on it as soon as i bought it, keep it simple, they just work

And if you're out on the road and have an issue with a mechanical, stock fuel pump, you're an auto parts store away from getting a stock replacement off the shelf.
If you have a whizz-bang googleplex super duper fuel dumper and it goes out you'll have to wait for Summit to bring you a new one which may destroy a trip.

I replaced the stock fuel pump on my truck in Deer River, Minnesota. I limped into town and found the auto parts store on main street. I installed the pump in the back lot. Total down time about 30 minutes.

go with a mechanical pump. electric fuel pumps always decide to go out at the worst times. in my opinion mechanical pumps last much longer too

I wish i could run a mechanical but i'm running a vortech 350 and have to use an electric pump and your right they do go out and its always at a bad time. always have a spare under the seat.

I have a stock AC Delco on my 383(specs in my sig).....I have never seen the old stroker to starve for fuel. The stock pump puts out 5 1/2-6 psi. Last trip out, the youngest kid was playin....@ 125 mph in 5th gear, I told him ....you have 2 choices, either back it down, or shift OD, & drop the hammer. On the way back, that lill bioch was in OD & I layed the hammer down. 6000 rpms in 5th gear is about 125 in that old truck....on the ride back in, I had her a tick over 140 in OD, & that stock AC Delco pump was still hangin 1 hp per cube, you are probably fine with the stock mechanical pump......if you have more hp than that, you might go elect. crazyL

The only reason I run an electric pump on non-injected cars is when the block isn't cast for one, like the old ZZ502s. Mechanical pumps are infinitely quieter and hassle-free.

I've got an Aeromotive A1300 pump in one car that's good for about 1500hp, and wound up adding a pump controller and moving it in-tank just to dampen the noise. So I use them were I have to, but given a choice always pick mechanical.

Awesome. Thanks for all the inputs. The truck is not going to be a daily driver or driven on the street at all. It's strictly going to be a drag truck. And right now all I'm running is a 500 cadi. All stock other than an aluminum high rise intake. Truck is pretty much gutted out and is a long bed, so I just wasn't to sure about the fuel pump situation, but thanks again.

mine leaked a bit after 40 years. still ran just leaked a bit. bellow pumps will pump mud and never jam
