License plate colors???

Ok I am going to try and repaint my license plates. Standard yellow letters on black plate. My question is what color yellow do I buy and from where?

Vote #2 for OneShot!
If you want your paintjob to last for years without fading or chalking,
it's the best readily available oil based on the market IMHO.

Get it at a auto paint shop or sign supply.

All right I'll try the front plate first and see how it turns out. If it turns out ugly I'll give in and let your wife do it Rene.

Okay Shawn, sounds good remember she charges double for people who tried to paint them themselves and then ends up screwing them up. BTW, I have a extra "Chase Chevrolet" lic. frame with your name on it.

If your not as handy with a paint brush as Rene's wife there is another way. You can spray the yellow first, then add a few coats of clear. From there you can paint the black in thin coats till you get proper coverage.
Once cured, use 1000 grit on a small block and sand the black away from the top of the letters. Go slow once you see yellow showing through. Its tedious work, but can give a really nice look.

Thank you Rene but I found a nice frame at the swap meet for $5.

Actually the truth be told my mom is going to paint them, she is quite good at this kind of thing. I would have given them to Rene first but my mom said "I can do it" and the price is right so we will see. Here is a before pic, she will start the front one tonight.

Re: License plate colors???

Here is a thread showing how I restored mine, as well as other ideas and suggestions: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php?p=3338604

I would recommend spraying the entire plate black first, then use a roller to do the yellow lettering. Follow with clear coat.

Here are some NOS black/gold Calif. license plates. The original black is a satin finish.

Re: License plate colors???

Thanks again leddzepp. I thought that the original black was semi gloss. Oh well I already sprayed the first one in gloss black. We will see how they turn out.

Re: License plate colors???

I think semi-gloss is close enough. Gloss is not original, but still looks very good IMO.
