Shipping Costs Just Doubled! They are charging to ship "air/space"

The high cost of shipping our parts just got a lot worse. FedEx is following the UPS practice of charging DIM (dimensional) pricing. Buddy seats: 98lbs (2-seats + center) in one box = $150...OK
Frame: 27lbs in about the same size box = $150!!! They just recompute it as if it weighed 166lbs because of the larger (not oversize) size. One manager said, "It costs us as much to ship a box of bricks as it does to ship a box of feathers".
Greyhound is going to have to be the preferred method of shipping larger boxes...about half price! It is a hassle to have to go to bus station to pick up, but if cost matters, so be it.

Re: Shipping Costs Just Doubled! They are charging to ship "air/space"

When I worked for DHL they charged either actual weight or volume weight which ever was greater. From the shippers side it makes sense. I use to pick up boxes the size of a refrigerator that only weighed 30lbs. they took up much more space on the plane and were charged accordingly. That's standard practice. I'm sure Fred Smith has been doing it for a long time as well. It still hurts the wallet though.

Frank, have they figured that in their website when you calculate yet? I just shipped a rad support, grill and bumper through them and it was the same as it was a month ago atleast thats what my quotes said but I haven't got the bill yet

Re: Shipping Costs Just Doubled! They are charging to ship "air/space"

Shipping companies and airlines have been doing that as long as I remember, at least in the early 90's when I worked for them. It's called dimensional weight. Thats why it is important to use a box or shipping crate close to the size of the item being shipped.

Thats what they are looking for on the websites when they ask dimensions and then approximate weight.

Re: Shipping Costs Just Doubled! They are charging to ship "air/space"

They just told me if it is over 36" in length, they compute DIM weight. A quick zip-to-zip on the web site estimates $28 for the box above, but the DIM runs it up to $151.
I ship these same (seats) boxes regularly for an average of $150 for both...now $300!!!

I noticed a spike in price today too when I went to FedEx to ship some door panels, didn't match the online quote either.
