Drive with tread nearly as small as 1/16" or 1.6 mil?
The shop guide says to replace the tires when tread is worn to a point where 2/32" of tread remains.
That seems a little small to me. Do you guys let it get that low befoer changing tires?

I usually don't. When I start having traction "issues", I start shopping.

When the wear marks come up...but before they are all the way across the tread.

Re: Drive with tread nearly as small as 1/16" or 1.6 mil?
I go until the wear marks show, but that is when I was traveling a lot. Since I don't drive much now, the sidewalls dry rot before the tread wears down. I think the wear bars are a good indicator, but usually your tires don't all wear to the same extent at the same time, so I rotate until they are all worn about the same. Of course, if I was driving at high speed on the expressway daily I would replace tires much sooner.

I don't wait till the "bars" are up
If I lose traction in the rain, worse in the snow as mentioned the sides prob dry rot,and prob some cupping, before the bars show

Re: Drive with tread nearly as small as 1/16" or 1.6 mil?
My O/T daily driver wears tires out like there's no tomorrow so I run tires until they're cupped real bad then hit up the local used tire place and get another set for $100 drive - out. 195/65-15's are cheap.
A dude I work with runs them down to the air. About once a year I have to go help him change a tire on the side of I-565. |

Re: Drive with tread nearly as small as 1/16" or 1.6 mil?
5 of my 8 vehicle's have different size's on the back and front and they never wear the same so I need 2 at a time. my 2 CrewCabs will get what it need's as need'd .
I try to replace em with enough tread to sell the old ones back to the tire store, I've bought enough tires and wheel's from em they always give me a pretty good deal.

Re: Drive with tread nearly as small as 1/16" or 1.6 mil?
The tires on my truck are completely bald, except for the front drivers side one. Took it on a nice 40 mile trip on an unplowed interstate today, and I will not be driving it again until I can get some tires on it.

i used to do that and look what happened: Caused by: The moral of the story is don't be too cheap; When you think about it tires are a very good value so don't be too cheap. Also, think about the safety implications. If it's more than 4 yrs or when the ride quality starts to go, i replace. Lesson learned. P.S. And yes, that is a new Hankook optimo 727 on the truck now. Very good quality, 100,000 warranty rating. Last edited by C-10 simplex; 02-17-2012 at 11:16 AM. |

Re: Drive with tread nearly as small as 1/16" or 1.6 mil?
Pics should re-size down in a few mins.
The new tire was $81 and about $22 in shipping(from tirerack). So by not spending $100, it cost me probably several hundred in bodywork which still has not been done. |

Re: Drive with tread nearly as small as 1/16" or 1.6 mil?
The 4 year rule is very important when it comes to trailers and RVs. Just because the tire has tread doesnt mean its sound. Id rather not buy new tires for my RV way b4 the tread is worn out but one front tire blow out in july on rice road on the way to the river towing the boat with my 3yo aboard has me shelling out the cash for new tires every 4 years. Thats 10 tires every 4 years between the trailer and RV. Alternating every 2 years helps the wallet dent. Trailer then in two years motorhome and so on.

Re: Drive with tread nearly as small as 1/16" or 1.6 mil?
P.S. The "offending" tire was from 1996 installed by the previous owner.
Seriously, being cheap costs more. And there is a difference between being frugal and cheap. |

Isn't it illegal to drive below 5/32 or maybe its 3/32? I know I had a cop check my tires once and he let me off but it was close.
