1965 C20 w/327
Purchased a 1965 Camper special from a friend a couple of weeks ago. The truck is a southern California truck which has made bolt removal amazingly easy compared to the other old trucks I have "fixed up". Cab corners and rockers are awesome for a 47 year old truck. The truck has a 327 with a sm420 trans and a "corporate" rearend with 4:11 gears. I Found the build sheet when I removed the seat--paper is brittle but complete. I plan to keep it original, but I have picked up a 85 C20 crossmember (complete with everything) so I can have front disk brakes and power steering.
I'll post some pics as soon as I figure out how.

Re: 1965 Camper Special build
Pics of the tear down. I will use POR-15 on the frame (powdercoat not in the budget) and I've been impressed with it. Have to get rid of the 16.5 inch rims in back and the split ring rims up front. will get 16" rims all around--still trying to figure out what size tires to use.

Re: 1965 Camper Special build
I just choked on my coffee!
I've been looking for that EXACT tailgate for months. Original paint, a little patina, black letters. My gosh, that thing is perfect! Love the truck, too. My '64 C-20 was optioned for camper duty as well, and my tailgate was removed probably when it was new. Same color as yours, too. There are some super-nice Camper Specials on the site. Yelmer has a fleet of '66s that are awesome. I really like the Camper Specials because many of them came with all the cool options.

Re: 1965 Camper Special build
After some research I'm thinking this might not be an actual Camper special model. It has regular C20 badges.
With the beautiful weather we had this weekend, I got alot of work done on the truck--still amazed at the fact that to get the truck to this point I havn't had to use a drop of pb blaster or a torch. Heres a pic of the truck at this point.

Re: 1965 Camper Special build
Frame is back from powder Coater. They did a great job and were reasonably priced.

Your progress is looking great! Looks like you found a great survivor that you are redoing. The powder coated frame is awesome looking. Keep the updates coming!

Cab is in epoxy primer and looks good--should have bed and doors finished by Thursday.

Re: 1965 Camper Special build
I'm hoping to clean this seat up to put back in the truck--any ideas on what to use?
I didn't realize the red seats were somewhat rare--If it weren't for another thread I came across I would have cut the material off the seat and replaced with a new vinyl cover.

Re: 1965 Camper Special build
Got some time to wrench on the truck this morning and soon found out the new control arm's cross shaft hole was not drilled deep enough by the manufacturer--Hard to believe. The passenger side was good, but notice the shock alignment. The shock should be between the two tabs.

Re: 1965 Camper Special build
Wow Chris that is a really nice truck, and with the red seat too. Awesome score!! I too have joined the 60-66 group with the C60 that was given to me[actually they gave me 300 to take it away] 64 model given to me by my brother in law. Hebought it newor his dad did on the farm and it stayed there its whole life. The truck has 29,300 miles or something like that. We put a battery on it and some brake fluid and my nephew drove it 45 miles to my shop. We are going thru the wheel cylinders and master to freshen up the brakes and the king pin bushing were worn so we replaced them. It dumps as it should and runs really good. I also plan on a tune up with maybe a hei dist.[292] We plan on parking it out by the shop and throwing sheetmetal on it then drive it to the scrap yard then dump it. so about 40 miles a year may be about it. Talk to you later . Thank you for the service to our country.Good luck and happy sanding. Jim
