questions about a inline 6 250
Of you guys who have knowledge in regards to Inline 6 engines especially the 250. first off I know the object circled to the left is barely noticeable' I know there is some type of sensor there just don't know what i should be.(PO broke it off and sealed it with gasket sealer) I'm guessing that it used to be the temp sending unit due to it being so close to the thermostat.
As for the second circled sensor I have no clue. The other two pics im interested in know if anyone recognizes the bracket sitting where the power steering bracket is. My question is looking at the upper bracket and the lower bracket that has the alternator connected to it, am I just missing the piece that is from what I can tell called the "Cradle" part that holds the PS pump?

Re: questions about a inline 6 250
The right circle is for the temp idiot light. The left circle, I have no clue. Is it on the lower t-stat housing that bolts to the head? As for the bracket, I've never seen a power steering bracket 250 or 292 that looks like that. Pretty sure that was for something else...

Re: questions about a inline 6 250
Well, since it looks to be a running driving truck and what was on the bracket is missing, my guess is that it was for the smog pump.

That left circle. I cant think of any sensor in that spot at all? Can you get a better pic. The Sensor on the right is head temp sending unit

Can't make out the sensor on the left (small circle and never seen that type of bracket either.
What I would like to know is engine number to determine what year and plant of manufacture. |

Re: questions about a inline 6 250
Goodpliers I believe is correct....smog pump brackets. As far as the circled items: The left hand circle for the smog pump, air line into the head (can't really tell from the pic), right hand circle looks to be the water temp light switch.

Re: questions about a inline 6 250
Some 250 water necks have a plug about the spot you've circled. It may have been replaced or possibly Andy's "Pot Smoking old man" used to have it or work on it.That's not a PS bracket but I think they're right about it being for the smog pump.Someone the other day posted a smog pump,do a search and see if you can find it to match the bracket. The adjustment for the alternator is on the PS bracket when used.

Re: questions about a inline 6 250
I couldnt take it anymore. I had to go in the garage and investigate. Definatally Smog Pump bracket for sure and a head temp sensor to the right. Looking at your picture and my picture it looks like you circles a Head Bolt on the left. Yep. Definatally a head bolt. I can see how it could look like a sensor that was filled in by its shape.

Re: questions about a inline 6 250
OK so Ive uploaded a few better/closer pics of what I was talking about and looking at the responses ** which I appreciate**, id have to agree that it was a bracket and such for a smog pump. Kinda bummed that its not part of a power steering bracket. Well, knowing this now saves me some headache figuring out what in the world the PO might have done.
In pic #3 you can see Ive found 3 of these type "head Bolts" im assuming they are all the same type. I would have to say Blkcovair, you seem the logical person to ask about these since I see in you pic you still have the smog pump and from the looks of it have a perfect engine to boot! I was just curious since I don't have a smog pump couldn't I just find the proper sized bolt and just plug it up that way? 68gmsee-- the last pic is for you the numbers read 3921968 GM 50 The engine isn't original the PO took the original 307 out and put this 250 in its place, it appears they used the original mounting bracket locations of the 307 with the 250 and it sits about 6 inches closer to the radiator than the proper location, fun fun right. But its all good cause ill just add that to the billion things I gotta do it. I'm converting my idiot light dash to a gauge dash and was also wondering if the "Temp sensor" is the same one I use for the water temp gauge? and also WHERE in the world do you run the line for the OIL PRESSURE GAUGE on a 250, or matter to the fact is there a place on a 250 for that? AGAIN, thanks again for taking the time to look at my post and helping!

Re: questions about a inline 6 250
Those should be the plugs holes for the smog control device. I remember now seeing one in a junkyard that had 4 metal tubes going to the head.
Here's a pic of oil plug on my 68 GMC. |

Re: questions about a inline 6 250
And here is where it goes in to the cab. Thin metal tube.
btw: that's not rust on the firewall. It's Texas red clay baked on there. |

Re: questions about a inline 6 250
oh OK, so that a very inconspicuous spot for the oil plug, i would have totally over looked that! if im seeing that correctly that's just above the starter right, just beside the dipstick, yeah i would have never EVER noticed that thanks!
Just ran out to the garage to check out that plug, never noticed it but I have a sensor there looks just like the one for the water temp. have no clue how I missed that before haha LOL, yeah I wasn't even thinking about it looking like rust, we have even though im in South Carolina we still call it "Georgia red clay" if you get it on your clothes, NOTHING will get it out!

Re: questions about a inline 6 250
Yep now I can see that it is the smog tube plug. You can get Brass plus that fit that hole. I never seen someone use a bolt. You're correct though the Oil feed is just above the starter.
You also have the same casting number on that 250 as I do, and judging from your pics it looks like it is the same year setup. Heres my build thread, theres a few more pics of mine in there. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=473165 |

Re: questions about a inline 6 250
pardon my "novice-ness" but what is or are "brass plus" or did you mean "plugs" and where would be the best place to find them and or ask for them?
and your truck looks AMAZING, totally jealous, but it also pushes me on to keep going on my project.

Re: questions about a inline 6 250
Sorry I type too fast for my own goog. Yes I meant plugs. I believe the Chevy v-8 plugs will work but Im not possitive. Heres an ebay auction. You can contact the seller (Heartbeat city) He sells alot of camaro and Nova parts. Im sure he'd know for sure if they will fit.

Re : A.I.R. Hole Plugs
Just take that old plug (which is a chopped off barrel nut welded closed) down to your local Hardware Store & match the threads up , they're about .50 CENTS each .
I use the allen headed plugs as they sit flush and look ever so much better than big brass hexes sticking out of the cylinder head . FWIW , many years of GM L6 engines have both an electrical and mechanical switch on the oil pressure port . Yes , ' Temp Sensor ' is the same as Temp. Sender , be sure to get the one you need , IE : light or gauge . Don't sweat being a Newbie , all of us were once .

Re: Re : A.I.R. Hole Plugs
Yeah... Most all hardware stores and maybe some auto stores have an area where they have nothing but brass bolts, nuts, plugs, etc.
