If the engine has alot of torque you might consider a 4L80E, but it's going to cost nearly twice as much.

4L80E is your best bet... atleast... thats what I would do.

Re: 454ci with 400 or 700r4 tranny
If your motor is "built" meaning over 450 ft lbs of tourque, the 400/4l80 will be your only options. the 700 just wont handle alot of torque or hard launches with that much or more grunt. no sense in throwing away money IMO. can you get a beefy 700? yes, do you want to spend 3K building one and then nuke it on a burn out? no!

Re: 454ci with 400 or 700r4 tranny
The 700R4 is not going to last very long...it's the amount of torque that will eventually be its demise. I would opt for the TH400 or a 4L80.

Re: 454ci with 400 or 700r4 tranny
I have a TH400 behind the 454 in my Burb and have been totally happy with it except for the highway rpm's. I will be switching to a 4L80E in the near future to lower my highway rpm's and attempt a gain in mpg's. I had thoughts about switching my 3.42 gears for a set of 3.07's, but I like how it launches now. I wouldn't even consider switching to a 700R4 behind a big block.
