Straight headers on anything and anywhere will get you a quick ticket. Better get 'em muffled down a bit or get used to the "Attention".

yep that would exceed the noise ordinance in any part of the country. Maybe if you live by a major airport......

They won't be too loud if they go into mufflers.

"Can it really be too loud?"
I think you answered that question yourself. You got a ticket, that means it is illegal, what more can be said. Personally, I would never drive like that, it really IMO is plain dumb.

Well, I would have to say YES! It can be too loud. What did the cop give you? No matter what type of header you buy, if you run open headers they are going to be too loud. Even if they say they are street legal. Street legal don't mean you can run around with them, open. Not sure why you would want to do that any ways.

Street legal means not limited to use on a race track - not this is all you need for a complete exhaust system. You can do some real damage to your engine if it isn't set up to run without the backpressure that mufflers produce.

You've heard the saying, "If it's too loud you're too old." I ran open headers to school for a few days while I was putting body lift in, sounded awesome. The school cop liked it too:p he's a cool guy though. Even with mufflers now, car alarms go off down main street and in parking lots

I ran open headers for like 2 days, I hardly went anywhere though. It was great while it lasted but I dont have the money to pay for a ticket.

open headers are legal in worcester mass jul 3-6, me and my friend uncorked the headers on his 69 camaro and cruised around screaming at the top of our lungs just to hear each other. it was cool but got annoying pretty quick.

The law can be funny. Need a drivers license in most cases to buy boose but can't use that license while drinking the booze.

Chevykid, put some good mufflers on the truck. Chances are you will have more torque and in some cases more horse power.
Man I know I have annoyed many of my neighbors with my loud cars or bikes.
It can be fun, but just play it cool so you don't piss off everyone around your neighborhood.

HAVE YALL EVER NOTICED THE HARLEYS THOUGH. THOSE ARE PRETTY MUCH JUST STRAIGHT HEADERS. I'VE HAD THEM PASS ME AND I CAN'T HEAR MY OWN TRUCK. I HAVE 2 1/2" SINGLE CHAMBER FLOWMASTERS THAT GO JUST PAST THE CAB. I KNOW IT'S ONLY 2 CYLINDERS BUT I BELIEVE THOSE AFTER MARKET PIPES FOR HARLEYS ARE JUST THAT. STRAIGHT PIPE!

gmc67swb, I have a tuned header on my Harley. Just last year at Sturgis, the bike was running strange, so I had it dyno tuned. Turned out to be a leaking intake seal. While I was waiting my turn to get dynoed, a fellow with a 95 cu.in. twin cam motor was having a major flat spot (between 2,500rpm to 4,000rmp range) on his bike. He was running essencially straight pipes with no backpreasure. Psycho, the tuner/dyno owner, installed some small baffles in his pipes to add back preasure and eliminate the flatspot. I was suprised how much better his bike ran with the small baffles. The baffles didn't affect his db on the exhaust. Funny thing tho was my little 80cu.in. motor still pulled more hp and torque with a good tuned header, than with straight pipes.
