inner fender/rad support paint question

gents, getting ready to replace the ol chrome stuff the po put under the hood with some original steel i picked up at a swap meet some time back.

now that's it's time to do it, I find I have a question. Was the black stuff under the hood (i.e. the radiator support panels, the inner fenders, etc etc gloss black, semi-gloss, or were some parts semi-gloss and some parts full gloss (a mix).

the po had some pretty high gloss on the inner fenders and area around the hinge supports etc and it just doesn't seem quite right. But I'm not going to be repainting EVERYthing under the hood yet - maybe later when i yank the motor, but for now, just getting rid of the out of place chrome the po had in there. thanks.

Re: inner fender/rad support paint question

The original paint wasn't fully flat black, it had some sheen but not much. Satin would replicate it pretty good. I like low gloss since its a little easier to clean- seems less porous and oil doesn't change the sheen or stain it like it does flatter paint.

This pic shows the sheen pretty good of the stuff I used, it's Valspar's Tractor Enamel with hardener from Tractor Supply.

awesome, thanks astro! I agree, that looks just about right. I've used the underhood black from eastwood, some good results, some not so much! I usually think it's a little too flat - what you posted looks very good imo. Thanks.

No problem! The valspar covers good and a quart with hardened is under $30 bucks. Here's a couple more pics.

Re: inner fender/rad support paint question

If I remember correctly, from reading another thread, I believe Valspar makes the John Deere blitz black. That would be another source for a economical satin black.

Re: inner fender/rad support paint question

Nice work astro!

Is that just the Valspar low gloss black tractor enamel with hardener? Or did you have to add any thinner/reducer to make it sprayable?

I've been looking for a good black underhood paint with a factory type low-gloss sheen and that looks perfect. I recently tried the Chassis Shield from Summit and it looks really good as far as the sheen/durability. But it's not as black as I'd like ... seems to have quite a bit of a brown tint.

Yep, that's the paint, and I did add (IIRC) mineral spirits to it to thin it so it sprayed better. It's black- no brown or grey tint, even in direct sunlight. It says on the directions what to use to thin it with if you're going to spray it, so double check when you're buying it, I could be wrong about using mineral spirits.

$35.00 a gallon or $13.00 a quart at Tractor Supply
