is it common for a power steering box to be leaking at this spot?

did a body lift on my 84, drilled the pins so the column could teloscope. now all of a sudden its leaking between the box and rag joint? how can i fix that, thanks

i didnt put and extension in it. instructions sed to drill the two plastic pis out and itll telescope out, but when i lifted the body up its didnt telescope and now its a slow drip between the inside of ragjoint and the box itself.

It's leaking at the seal behind the rag-joint?

Just kidding. It can leak there and at the pitman arm shaft.
You added some stress with the lift. You may be able to buy seals but be aware you may need a speedy sleeve to fix the grooved sealing surface.

You may be better off to buy a good used box. GM CK RV trucks aren't the only available donors. Saginaw steering boxes were used on many GM and Chrysler vehicles. Someone else who knows more may pipe up on what boxes are interchangeable with ours and what the tradeoffs are. Hollander will not have all of the available donors listed. Some donors won't have the same gear ratio and number of turns stop to stop.

It can be fixed for less than $10 if your lucky. Just get an input seal kit.

But be warned, it may not go as planned once you get the steering box apart.

I just tried it and ended up getting a rebuilt box. Once I got inside the box needed a complete rebuild.

Hey guys, brother from another mother here. I got a '64 fleetside with a '73 era power steering box in it. Having the same problem. I noticed that when I am straight it doesnt leak. But if it is slightly turned it will leak. Anyways, Hatzie mentioned that you guys would know the in's and out's of these saginaw boxes. I am interested in more info on that too. Lock to lock, turn rate etc. Hope I am not stealing the thread but more steering box options would be awesome.

Puppy got it right, Get an adjuster plug seal kit. It is fairly easy to replace. Just remember...When you back the plug out, COUNT the # of turns out, and re-install same # of turns in.
