63' stock gas tank question

My truck has a bad gas tank and came with a replacement one to switch it with. Can you take the rubber grommet around the filler off with out destroying it or is it just better to get a new one ahead of time?..

you shouldn't have to take the grommet out, just unhook the hose at the tank side and reattach there, be sure to check it and replace the hose if it is bad they are a pain to get to when the tank is in.

My rubber gasket came out fine with the filler neck and tank still installed and it was dried up. I hear it wont go back on without removing the neck.

I just got my new gasket , used a screwdriver and pushed it back in place with the tank and neck still installed. It fit flush, Ill have to wait and see if it stays down or not.

How can you tell if the original in can tank is bad? I think mines original, truck hasn't run in 10 years..

I was told when I bought the truck the gas tank had a leak when filled more than half full and was provided with a replacement...

If its loose around the neck of the tank and your pumping gas and overfill it will run right on down into the cab, a potential bomb if you smoke or have a short in the cab.

It took alot of pushing but seams to be tight as the old one. It probably would have gone on easier with some kind of lube, I just didnt use any.
