I hate rivets II

I know many of you and been there and done that...but I just want to say (again) how much I hate rivets ! Now that I am almost done I have gotten good at taking them out. I tried the drill method and it didn't work for me. I have been cutting one side off (or grinding it off) and smacking them with a cold chisel to get them started. Then grab a drift and drive it home. Anyway...I still hate rivets.

Yep, hate em! I cut an "x" in the head then blast them off with the air chisel.

EXACTLY! I will never do a rivet any other way now that I have used this method. A million times better than any other way.

That's my method too....still not fun, but beats the hell out of them trying to drill them out and beating them out by hand.

Can you splain a bit more? Do you cut the "X" as a place to start or hold the chisel in place? How does this method get them out the other side?

Re: I hate rivets II

Cut across the face of the rivet making a pattern that looks like a Phillips head screw. Then hit from the side with your chisel. It not only cuts, but it bends the "quartered" piece in such a fashion that it breaks that section off. Move to the next "quarter" and repeat. You can chisel the large frame rivets off in less than a minute with a sharp chisel.

You still need to take a punch and whack 'em to get them out the other side.

Re: I hate rivets II

The downside to the "x" method is that you have to be careful how far you cut the "x" in the head, or you will make marks on the substrate (frame, etc). And you need to cut them evenly in halves. If you cut one line too far to the side of the head, it can be a real bear to blast it off still. The "x" relieves enough material to allow the 4 pieces to bend and break off when you get the chisel under them, instead of directly shearing, pushing or beating the metal s you would be doing with chisel only.

Too many words, if I had a pic that would do!
