WTB: Eaton H052/72 4.10 3rd Member

Hi guys, trying to find a 3rd member for my H072, need to have 4.10 gears. Would prefer (and pay more) if it has a locker, but I could go either way.

Just need something better then 5.14's

Ya give a guy 5.14's and he complains?????? I might have a line on a nice 4.10 drop out. I will check for you. I've crated and shipped quite a few of these. Looking at around $300 shipped. Let me know if you are interested. Thanks, Sharpie

Where are you in new hampshire? I think I have what you want and Im only in RI might save a lot on shipping. I might be running up to exeter some time to pick up some stuff. Let me know maybe we can work something out,you could grab my stuff and we meet halfway or?

Exeter is close to 2 hours away from me, so it'd be a haul to pick stuff up, and meet you half way.

Any idea how much you'd want for the 3rd member? Does it have a locker?

A quick UPS estimate on shipping showed $66 for 90lbs (about what they weigh?), and I'd use more on gas to get it I'd think..

Ill weigh it and see and Ill post some pictures of it.Im not positive of the gearing but I have the cab of the truck it came from so I will try and look to see if its on the spid or not. I thought I rememberd it being 4 11 but I dont know if that was really even an option for those. I actually have several but dont know the gearing on any without pulling the covers. This one is sitting in the corner of my garage just the center chuck so if its not on the spid I'll count up the teeth. I dont believe its a locker but to be perfectly honest I don't know that much about these other than just swapping a couple out.Let me check it out and I'll get back to you in a bit.

If I was into offroading the 5.14's might be a different story... But I'd really like to be able to go over 45mph

I'll see what Old Chevy Guy comes up with first, due to location

Ok the spid was unreadable in that truck.I counted the teeth on the ring and there were 41. Does that tell you anything or do you need a count on the pinion?Theres 10 bolts that hold the center in. Here is a few pictures of that piece it weighs in at 106lbs. I hear people say the ratio is stamped in there but I couldnt find it anywhere. This chuck is from a 69 c20 cst 307 3 speed. I have another thats also 69 c20 350 w/4speed. There'a another that I dont remember what it came from but it has 9/16 studs so it must be 69 or newer. Down the road I have a 67 c30 origanally 292 w/4speed and another 69 or 70 not sure that was a c20 not sure of the motor other than v/8 and had a 3 speed. Is this the same as what you need and can you tell by the picture or is there some kind of identification for me to find? The second two pictures are of the other two rear ends that are here. If this is what you are looking for and I went to exeter in the near future would it be worth it to drive that far or not even? I would go $200 plus what ever the shipping is,if its even the right thing. Also would potentialy drive it as far as exeter. If thats not the right gearing I can pull some other covers also.

10-41 is what is stamped.I think one of your pictures didnt upload.I guessing that what I have is the open gear. As for coming up Im not sure,another member was giving away a hood and grill and I was going to go get them but I would still have to coordinate that with him If you Pm me your address I can also get a shipping quote thru my FedEx account just for weighing all options. So is 10-41 correct?

I shipped an open carrier center section a couple years ago from Indiana to Virginia and it was $120.00 including the packaging. I think it weighed over 100lbs and the no-spin are even heavier.

P.S. if the other deals do not work out I have an open carrier one also.

I did this same swap on my 72 Suburban C20 two years ago. the 4.57 was so low that I was barely able to use second gear during quick acceleration. The 4.10 gear is 10% softer but nets 20 to 30% better fuel economy (13-14mpg instead of 10-11). Even now the engine turns 3,000 rpm at 60mph. 50mph isn't too bad, but I picked up a '66-69 Borg Warner overdrive equipped Saginaw 3 speed that (once installed) will allow me to cruise even more comfortably and allow for long distance cross country trips in the years ahead.

I'm definately looking forward to the 4.10's... Right now, my engine is comfortable at 30-40, any more then that and it's wound up pretty good. No idea what my mileage is now, but I'm sure it's pretty awful. I get to about 5MPH now in second (I don't even think about first) before I have to shift, so hopefully that will change too...

Did you have to change the gear reduction box on your transmission to correct the speedometer?

I just bought a new plastic speedo gear with fewer teeth to account for the same 10% drop and swapped it into the transmission. Less teeth means the gear spins faster. The truck was reading 54mph when it was in fact going 60 due to too many teeth after the final drive change.

4.10/4.57 = .897 (90%)
4.10/5.13 = .799 (80%)

You could multiply the number of teeth on your original speedo gear by .8! But I think the gear I used had 22 teeth and that should work for you if you are running tires the same diameter as stock. Classic Industries carries these new, just be sure you get the correct style as they also carry the larger gear used in some other transmissions.
