guys with reproduction rear bumpers

I'm looking at buying a rear chrome bumper for my 66 stepside, but hows the quality of them? I know they wont be as good as the originals; I just want something that wont rust up and thats not made out of tin cans.

give me your opinions and what company did you get yours from?

(I did search and didnt find anything on this subject)

Re: guys with reproduction rear bumpers

I got mine from Brothers. They have two levels; replacement (insurance) and "triple plated" show. I got the higher priced "show" level. It's OK. I replaced a Barden bumper so I can't compare to OEM, but it's nowhere near the quality of the front bumper. The fitment was a little off. Make sure you keep everything loose (brackets, bumper bolts) until you get all the bolts in before you start tightening anything down. I was by myself and was having quite a time trying to hold everything together until I could get all the bolts in and nuts started so I snugged the brackets up to the frame. I had all sorts of pry bars, 2x4's, etc. trying to force the holes in the brackets to match the holes in the bumper to get the bolts in. I went through this twice as I was rear-ended and had to replace the first bumper. Both had the same problems trying to align everything up.

Re: guys with reproduction rear bumpers

I was going to buy after market bumpers but I heared to much bad about them so I had a company in LA rechrome the stock ones. I will be picking them up this Friday at the Portland Or swap meet. They say they are triple chrome show quality. I hope they are as nice as they said they would be.

Do you mind if I ask what you paid for chrome and what company? There are a few companies around me that want 5-600 for what I consider show quality and they will send it to mexico for 300 for a so so job that wont last more than 5 years.

Re: guys with reproduction rear bumpers

My aftermarket rear bumper is not chromed, but I can offer that it is much thinner than a stock bumper. When tightening the bumper bolts, be sure to just make them snug enough and no more. Since the 1960's I always pulled my bumper bolts up as tight as I could get them. Did the same thing on the replacement bumper and promply dimpled the area around the bolt holes. Also, if you have a chance to inspect them before purchase, make sure the square bolt holes are all level across the bumper. I believe it's the right rear on mine is higher than the other three. No one else has ever noticed, but I sure do. Apparently they were punched free hand and not in a jig.

I paid $280 per. I know they didn't send it to Mexico because I didn't give them enough time. I talked to 3 companies in the LA area this company
D&G chrome was the highest priced and the only one claimming show quality and a warranty. I had them do some bumpers years ago and they turned out ok.
I well just hope for the best.

Re: guys with reproduction rear bumpers

thanks for the info guys. I'm still looking for a original bumper then getting it chromed but if I can't find one I'll just have to settle for a aftermarket one.

Actually I have the original bumper for my truck but its the c-channel "farm truck" bumper with the dealer's name stamped in it. but thats not the look i want

here a pic of it back in the day

Re: guys with reproduction rear bumpers

Brothers trucks only had one option when I bought mine. Six or seven years old now and the chrome is holding up fine even on the inside it looks ok. It was a driver for a couple of years and seen some rain and snow. It is thinner and as said in the earlier post just snug the bolts!

I got front and rear repops for my '63 from GMC Pauls. They are lighter in weight, thinner material than the stockers, but fit well and the chrome looks good a year later. My truck is garage kept and I keep a good coat of wax on the chrome.

Re: guys with reproduction rear bumpers

Almost impossible to find OEM in good condition. I purchased front and rear bumpers for my step side from Brothers...Very happy with the fit and chrome finish (lifetime warranty) on the chrome...

Re: guys with reproduction rear bumpers

Went with a rear repo on my from Ecklers. Fit and finish were great. Daily driver that is parked outside. I keep a nice coat on the bumper every 10-14 days and it looks great
