Backup light switch 66 C10, 4 sp.

Folks. I'm still trying to locate an OEM style backup light switch assy. for my 66 C10. I have a compound 1st four speed. I know the switch mounts on the shifter just above the tranny. I have the mount etc. I just can't find anyone who carries a switch.. Or even a part # for that matter... I've tried the local wrecking yards but these trucks are rare in the local yard scene.. ANY help available out there????

What transmision are you running? I dont know what a compound 1st four speed is. Stock 4 speed in the 66 chevy would have been Sm-420 Muncie or the Sm-465 Muncie.

Re: Backup light switch 66 C10, 4 sp.

It's a granny gear 4sp. Shifter comes straight out of the top of the gear box. I'm not sure of the model # sorry. The shifter has a paddle on it that engages the backup light switch when pulled into reverse. I'm going to guess that all of the era 4 speeds in these trucks are the same??? 66 being the 1st year of backup lights.... Was kind of hoping that someone who's converted their tranny might have one laying around??? They appear to be very difficlut to come across..

Re: Backup light switch 66 C10, 4 sp.

ok, so SM-420. The SM-465 was used in 69-up if memory serves me right. This is a pic of one that was retrofitted using Napa part # NS6578. The site is kinzers.com, has a small write up on retrofitting a switch if you cant find OEM parts. I thougt only the 1967 SM-420 had the switch on them though. More people will chime in.

Upper left hand corner of the picture, is this the switch your looking for?. No I do not have any. They are the same on Corvair.

I can't tell you what year, I've seen them on Ebay. I've never come across a number to reference it by. Wish I could help more.

If you ask the seller of an Ebay Back Up Lamp Kit to forward your request to the purchaser, you might find someone who is not going to use the 4 speed switch, running instead an automatic.

Re: Backup light switch 66 C10, 4 sp.

Well. Absolutely no luck. Guess I'm just going to have to retro something in that at least "maybe" looks a little OEM. Just didn't think this switch wouold be so difficult to locate...
Again, Guys, Thanks for all your input and ideas!!

Re: Backup light switch 66 C10, 4 sp.

When I found out the price for the OE switch, I had to figure out a simpler and less pricey solution. The switch is a momentary push button switch. It's on only when the plunger is depressed.
A local electronics store, which went out of business last month, sold me a switch #30-457. I do not know the manufacturer, but it has 2 terminals and a plastic cap. It was around $6.00 or so.
I have a 1966 C-10, too and the same transmission. The tab that applies the push was wobbled out on my shifter, so I used an old dental bite-wing x-ray holder, held on with zip ties.

Here's what the switch looks like.Name: photo2.jpg

I hope this helps. The only downside is when Lucy is rambunctious, her tail knocks the holder out of position.

I went to NAPA got one that looked close and made a bracket adapter to fit the stock one. Works just fine.
