1969 Chevy C10 Project (Houston, TX)
Hey guys,
I'm a newbee to old trucks. I guess I'd have to say a newbee to DIY vehicles as well. Thought I'd dive right in by trading my daily driver (03 chevy silverado) for this 1969 Chevy C10 (Long Bed). Well, it's my first old truck and I'm so glad to have it in my possession. Guess I made the jump because of all the memories from riding in my grandfather's old 1972 truck. Those were the best days as a kiddo. Anyway, here are some details on my new (old) truck: 383 stroker hydraulic cams roller rockers aluminum heads aluminum intake 650 edlebrock carb b&m shifter 350 turbo trans locked rear-end 22 gallon fuel cell in bed I need to find out how to manuever through this site to find out how to move the B&M shifter from the tree and also how to fix the timing. Every time I kill it, the engine continues for 15 seconds or so. Well, glad to be here. Anyone else in the Houston area? FYI - I plan on trying to restore this with my sone (ages 7 and 8). - GRIMLAND Last edited by GRIMLAND; 04-26-2012 at 02:46 PM. |

Re: 1969 Chevy C10 Project (Houston, TX)
Thanks AK72K10. The only thing I've done is installed a seatbelt so I can take my boy to Cub Scouts on Tuesdays. I'd like to paint it (or get it painted) that old olive green. I'll probably do the inside green as well. Not so sure what to do about the bed. The guy who had it before me had it sprayed. I'd like to put the wood panels in the bed. It's also got the fuel cell in the bed which I'd like to move back behind the seat.

Green trucks are cool! you got a great start for you and your boys. Sounds like you need to just to a basic new owner tune up on the truck.

Re: 1969 Chevy C10 Project (Houston, TX)
I was thinking about addressing the timing issue on my motor this weekend. Not a clue on how to do it so I'll be spending some time on google. Will probably also pick up a book for my engine. I've been told I should get a "timing light". Looking forward to learning how to do that.

Re: 1969 Chevy C10 Project (Houston, TX)
Just picked up a timing light myself, though I still have yet to get my rig to turn over, but thats a story for another time.
Been using a pretty good book I found at one of those auto stores: Rebuilding Small Block Chevrolet Engines Been kind of a Rebuild for Dummies, and its really helped me figure some things out. Also, a buddy of mine loaned me an old 1981 Autolite book which had the firing sequence and some other neat info. Looking forward to seeing the new paint scheme, my dad has a 1970 AMC Rebel Machine that had an oldschool green paint job from the factory. AK72K10 |

Re: 1969 Chevy C10 Project (Houston, TX)
Was at O'Reily's tonight getting the Haynes book and ran into a guy from the neighborhood. He asked what I had under the hood and I showed him. Real nice guy. I told him I was going to see how much timeing lights were. He said I could stop by anytime I wanted to and use his. So I stopped by and this guy is so very nice. he got out his timing light, special wrench to loosen the nut that holds on the distributor, makrked a line on the circular thing that has the timeing numbers and adjusted it to 15. It was at 40. (I know I sound like a newby...I am). Anyway, John (the neighbor) was so very nice and his knowledge is leaps and bounds above mine. Anyway, my timeing is good on my truck now. I do need to go pick up a manifold exhaust gasket tomorrow. I'll install it. the one that is on there now is coroded. Sure helps when there are others to show you the ropes.
