OEM color for the 400sbc?

We're at the stage we're thinking about painting the engine, and I was curious what the stock color was? I hope it wasn't the 'traditional' orange.

The engine did come out of a car, according to its numbers.

Re: OEM color for the 400sbc?

The 400's were painted the same colors as other small blocks of their time ...

I believe the 400's were originally used in cars from 1970 - 76 and in those years they were all Chevy Orange.

The 400 was available in trucks from 1975 - 80 and the engine colors for those years are:

75 - 76 = Chevy Orange
77 = changeover year with early ones being orange and later ones blue
78 - 80 = GM Corporate Blue

Edit: I just noticed that this is for your 66 C10. Seeing as how the 400 isn't OE for this year, the paint color is really up to you. If you're going for a period correct look, you could paint it gray like the 283's or green like the 327's.

Gm also went to Black on there engines as well later on ... Less warrenty problems since an oil leak wasn't as noticable to owners until you started to get a puddle ...

Good to know; looks like he wanted something a little different anyways and had me photoshop somethin up for him. Not our engine, just a google-image find, but with the colors we want to use on it.
