Coil Question

Hey guys did a tune up on my truck yesterday new plugs, wires etc. noticed a wire loose beside the ignition coil. fastened to the side of the bracket that bolts the coil to the engine block is a small device that looks similar to a condensor. it has a single wire coming out the top of it that attaches to the (+) side of the coil. that wire broke off. trying to find out what that piece is, I thought it was some sort of resistor but cant find a part that looks like it anywhere or in any diagrams that i have. is it a necessary part any thoughts?

It's a capacitor used as an ignition noise supressor.
Keeps you from hearing the sparkplugs firing in your radio.
Not needed if you don't have a radio.

Hey thanks guys i thought that might be a possibility but wasnt sure. I had read somethings about a resistor that would drop the voltage from 12 to 8 or 9 to prevent pre-mature burning of the points and just wanted to make sure this wasnt one of those.

I think you are refering to whats called a resistance wire. Im not an electrician, but i think that a resistance wire is a different size wire diameter. Not sure tho.
