New engine will not start

I have a new 383 engine that will only start at 1/2 throtttle and bearly runs for a few seconds, it miss fires and sends out black smoke. It seems to be not firing on all cylinders. the timing is right and all parts are new. it has a Holley double pumper carb. any ideas?
Thanks

You say the timing is set right, may want to turn your distributor 180 degrees and see if it still acts up

Double check your ignition, vacuum, and fuel pump. Pull out #1 plug get it top dead center then pull off dist. cap and see if its pointing at cylinder #1. it sounds like your 180 off like Eyegore said.

I agree. Your timing is not correct.

Check your valve lash. If its too tight it will cause those symtoms.

Re: New engine will not start

I used a timing light when cranking the motor over and the # 1 is firing at the right time and I think if the timing is out 180 degrees it would not idle at all. I know these engines are not rocket science, I'm thinking now the valve timing or clearance is wrong. I had a machinist assemble the beast.

Power valve. Common on some Holley carbs. A backfire will blow them out if they don't have the kit installed.
