no start
Been waiting for this day for a whiel and, so I figured I was at the point where I can fire my motor to make sure it runs before I run out of warranty...and....well... it just cranks... I can smell fuel, but not sure if I am getting spark, not sure what else to check. I don't have the o2 sensors hooked up, but figured it would at least start without them.
Any suggestions? Put new plugs in since 2 of therm were cracked down the top ceramic, Anyone know what kind of compression should I see on each cylinder for the 5.3? Just running down my battery... First of many tries last one for the day |

Re: no start
What's your fuel pressure? Did you check to make sure you have power at the PCM and injectors and coils? If those were videos, I couldn't get them to play.
As for compression, I'm not sure but as long as they're all close to the same you should be OK. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: no start
Those are videos, odd they won't play for you. I don't have a way to tell me the fuel pressure; do I have to go out and buy a guage? I did not check the power at each injector, I could smell the fuel when it was trying to start, so I figured it was getting the needed fuel. When I kick the key on switch you can hear it kick cycle something up at the throttle body and the check engine light is working. I can pull codes about the O2 sensor and the TAC module.

Re: no start
Engine needs three things to run: fuel, air, and spark. Sounds (smells) like you're getting fuel. I would head to Harbor Freight and grab a noid light for testing injector pulse and ignition spark. AutoZone should be able to rent you a kit for free, as well. A schrader style pressure gauge would be nice as well. That's the first step: determine if you're getting the vitals, then we can help troubleshoot from there...

Re: no start
Not sure if the fuel rail is the same on 5.3 or not, but I read a while back that a guy was having the same symptoms and it turned out to be air in the fuel lines not letting the fuel get to the injectors. He bled it with the schrader valve on the rail and it fired. I hope for your sake it's as easy as that. Good luck.

Re: no start
I figured it out! Fuel pump relay was not getting power. Hooked it straight to the battery and at least it starts...

Re: no start
Videos probably wouldn't play because I'm using a phone. Glad you got it figured out, but odd you were getting a fuel smell without the pump on.

Re: no start
One other thing, the PCM supplies POWER to the fuel pump relay instead of ground like for the ignition and fans. Maybe your problem?

Re: no start
That is probably why the videos don't work. I wonder if it was old fuel in the rails I was smelling. I empied the passenger side rail, but don't think I did on the drivers.
I'll have to talk to the guy that did my harness. He just labeled the wire "to fuel pump" and it was a red 10ga wire. I ran it back to the + on the walboro. I think that should have worked. I haven't run it for long since I don't have the radiator or anything hooked up. Just wanted to make sure it started before I moved forward. http://tinypic.com/r/jkc179/6 |

Re: no start
Will this type of flare work with the fuel lines on the 5.3 if I use fuel injection clamps and 3/8 fuel injection hose? I was going to run nylon, but that stuff just kinks and worries me with the exhaust.

Re: no start
It would be better if you had a bubble flare instead of the single flare you are showing. That one you have can cut the inside of the hose, plus its a pain to slide the hose over that one.

Re: no start
X2. If you have a flaring tool, just use the first step in making a double flare. Keep the rubber hose lengths to a minimum and you will be fine. I also like to double clamp them with the screw part of the clamps on opposite sides of each other.
