Differences between 72 Custom and Custom/Deluxe
I am going to look at this restored in 1992 truck later in the week and after looking at the pics noticed some things. This truck is a Custom which I guess is the very base model. Is that why it has the dog dish hubcaps ( which I like the look of on this truck)flat side markers ( as opposed to the fish eye ones) and the outside mirrors are white instead of chrome. In the rear pic you can see the spare mounted inside the box, was this one of the spots Gm mounted the spares because my pink truck had the inside box spare carrier in front of the box wheel wells. This is a 350 A/T truck with P/S and P/B and the seller wont give a price until I come look at it. I'll keep you guys/girls posted.

Re: Differences between 72 Custom and Custom/Deluxe
The Custom/10 was the base truck and pretty stripped from the factory. The hubcaps would have been white Chevrolets (these are GMC). The markers are these and the same on either trim level. The below eyeline mirrors were an option and these are replacement aftermarkets (not correct). The sidemount tire carrier if a factory option is usually in the left front, but were sold as accessories and aftermarket as well. The stripes, two-tone paint, white wall tires, chrome bumper, radio, 350, A/T, P/S and P/B were all options that should be on the SPID at this trim level. The step bumper is aftermarket but could have been dealer installed.
NOTE: In the brochure clip below the two-tone is an option on the Custom Deluxe as well and the above is for US spec. trucks.

Re: Differences between 72 Custom and Custom/Deluxe
Thanks for the info. I thought the hubcaps were GMC. I just happen to have 15 x 8 Rallys waiting for a new home.

Re: Differences between 72 Custom and Custom/Deluxe
If it matters the windshield is also incorrect with the shade band and tint was an option as well. The outer grill's black paint is missing and the wiper blades should be stainless.

Re: Differences between 72 Custom and Custom/Deluxe
What do you mean by the outer grill black paint is missing. Here's a pic of my truck and the grill looks the same to me. That is not to say my tuck could be wrong as well, but this is the way it was when I bought it in 2001

Re: Differences between 72 Custom and Custom/Deluxe
Tim always has great replies. My Custom Deluxe has the same markers.
I think the dual type marker lights were reserved for CST/Cheyenne models.

Re: Differences between 72 Custom and Custom/Deluxe
here is the black trim paint Tim speaks of - this is how they left the factory, regardless of trim level the black is painted onto the outer grille shell around the headlight bucket trim).
Btw, if a seller would not tell me price, I would not waste my time, it's poor salesmanship to not let someone know the firm or starting price so that the buyer knows if they should even waste their time. Playin games. |

Re: Differences between 72 Custom and Custom/Deluxe
The 71 and 72 trucks had a satin black band behind the headlamp bezels and 71's additionally had a perimeter band accent band. These are rarely redone and are not present on reproduction grills. I think a lot of people who do know leave them off brighten the front end and eliminate the fade hassle.

Re: Differences between 72 Custom and Custom/Deluxe
Wear shabby clothes and drive a beater when you go and see the truck.
They guy will suspect you have no money and you'll be more able to negotiate a better price.

Re: Differences between 72 Custom and Custom/Deluxe
The truck will have steel door panels, black rubber mat,and fairly plain seat cover,as well as plain black dash knobs and no bright work around the windows. The no option Custom would have white hubcaps and bumpers. The standard mirror was the "Sport Mirror",with painted or bright below eyeline mirrors an option. Customs come with no exterior trim

Re: Differences between 72 Custom and Custom/Deluxe
Except for being a GMC with optional large mirrors and tu tone paint, this is the way a custom would look if you didn't add extra cost exterior items such as chrome front bumper and hubcaps, side moldings etc. I would call it the "fleet owner" truck or "all business" truck, no extra cost gingerbread to get the job done. However, back in the day, you could have ordered a "Custom" with all the power options, such as power brakes, power steering, air conditoning etc. that you would find more commonily in a cheyenne super.

Re: Differences between 72 Custom and Custom/Deluxe
LOOKED all over for this picture earlier. But this a good example of a near stock '72 Custom truck. Beyond the wheels, tires and dual exhaust it is a low option appearing truck. The engine, locking hubs, mirrors, sliding window and stripes seem to be the extent of RPO options. The step bumper is of course common accessory. Besides it shows the gtill to good effect.

Re: Differences between 72 Custom and Custom/Deluxe
Thanks for the input everyone. If I score the truck I think all I need to do is put on some fish eye side markers with a set of rallys as well as a rear sport bumper and some chrome below eye mirrors and it'll completely change the trucks appearance.

Re: Differences between 72 Custom and Custom/Deluxe
That will be nice. I think the truck looks great as is. Like factorystock said,Custom/Custom Deluxe/Cheyenne/Cheyenne Super are all about what the truck starts out with, not what it could have in the end. Manimal's Longhorn is either a pre-71 Custom or '71 Custom Deluxe. In 67-70 the Custom was mid-level trim and became Custom Deluxe in '71. I have seen Cheyennes with 6cyl/3spd,am radio,no a/c,warning lights and I have seen Customs with 402/auto,am/fm,a/c,tach dash, tilt, and about every other option you could think of. I think trucks like that are my favorite these days. There's something more special about finding a base truck loaded with options compared to just another loaded Cheyenne Super. Plus,if someone counterfeits a truck, they do the latter. I could get used to the rubber mat, steel door panels, and plain window surrounds if I had all those other amenities. Also,if a guy wanted to customize, why start with the factory trim?
Anyway, that's more stuff about Custom vs Custom Deluxe '72s. That GMC is a beaut! Nothing wrong with that truck (except that Highliner)

Re: Differences between 72 Custom and Custom/Deluxe
I agree Tim, I could also add A/C to that Custom truck if I kept it long enough.
Why do I do that, fall in love with a truck, buy it, drive it for a month then another catches my eye, so I sell it. I did get an email back with a phone number for the blue GMC and will contacting the seller today.
