Smile In need of help

I just bought this 69 4x4 acouple weeks ago and have a few questions on it ,
first the TC i dont know which one it is and its not sending any power to the front drive shaft and was wondering who might know the model and maybe why its not powering the front.
it does have lockouts with a D44 .

2nd, who makes disc brakes for the front so i can get the drums off.?


3rd, 33,12.50s on 10" rims do you think they will fit with know lift or maybe just longer shakels on the front.? or should i stick with 8" rims.

I have been doing some reading on here and it seems Skyjacker makes a 2.5" lift.? is this right because this might just be the way i go then my springs are wore out for sure and was going to buy new ones anyway so if i can get a small lift thats what i will do then it should clear 33s easy enough.


anyone have pic of a 2.5" lift with 33s on 8 or 10" rims. ?

That is a Rockwell T221 tcase. It would be cheaper and easier to just do a axle swap for the front. There are a ton of Dana 44 with disc brakes out there for sale. Any dana 44 after 72 will have disc brakes. As for the tires, 33x12.5x15/16 will fit on a 15/16x10 rim.

Great thanks for the info, so i have 350 and SM 465 tanny with a Rockwell T221 TC.

no to figure out whats up with no 4wd on it..lol

had not thought about swaping in a different earlyer front axle, have to see what i can find around here.

I agree rockwell 221 tcase. As for no power to the front. The shift pattern is 2h against firewall, then 4h then N then 4L against seat. If now power when engaged, check the hubs to make sure they are engaging. Is the front shaft turning when the tcase is engaged? If you dont have a helper, take the hump out and watch the front driveshaft when if 4X to see if it is turning. Its a pain to take out, but safer than laying under the truck while its moving. If the shaft turns when the tcase is engaged, I would look at the hubs and make sure they are not gummed up. Clean them really well. There is a lot of dispute about packing the hubs with grease, some say do it once a year, some say dont even let grease near them. In my experiences, if you pack it with too much and the grease gets gummy, thats when the hubs quit engaging.

The front drive shaft does not spin wether its in 4 high or 4 low the shaft just sets there .

Might be time to find a new T-case. If so, upgrade to a NP205.

if you do upgrade to a 205, keep the 221 around if you can. The parts are hard to find, and you may be able to sell parts to others.

Can i just fix the 221.? I mean can get new parts for it right or not.?
I would just soon keep it and fix it rather then buy a 205 that i dont know what shape its in then have to fix it as well, then will my drive shafts and cross member all still work.

Kinda like the front diff I would really rather find a disc kit for it then buy another diff and have to make sure it has the right gears plus that it works well.
I wont be taking this offroad and finding mud holes or beating on it or anything.

I'm in the same boat. My 221 works fine but I am going to swap over to a NP205 since the truck is apart anyway and I'm putting in a new engine, ranger splitter, driveshafts, etc.

I'll be willing to sell whatever parts you need for your 221 to help pay for my 205 purchase.

If you had a 1970 model truck you could easily ad the front disc brakes but since you have a 69 closed knuckle front then an axle swap would be your cheapest and easiest route. From the looks of that front output someone has been inside that case recently.

Nice looking truck

the TC definitely looks to recently have been worked on. Maybe the linkage isn't set up properly?

I talked to many people and spent a great deal of time on here trying to read up on getting power disc brakes on my '69 dana 44. Turned out the easiest thing by far was putting a '72 dana 44 on there with disc brakes and scavenged all the lines and master cylinder as well. Gotta say it makes a huge difference with the power discs as opposed to the manual drums.

My opinion is get the tcase checked and see what is wrong with it. It may be something simple or it may be shot. Then get ahold of sunsoaked, cause he has a working one and figure a way to get it from arizona to you. The 221 is a good tcase, I have one in my 69 right now and I like it. If you find what is wrong with yours, you may try Novak Industries in Utah, they helped me with mine, but I have to warn you, the 221 is an outdated tcase and parts for it are hard to come by. As for the front axle, as others have said, it is easier and cheaper to find one with discs already and just swap it in, not hard to do. What gears are you running?

Yes i had to install a new front drive shaft as the old one was shot, could it be i stuck it in wrong.? i just stuck it back in like it came out ( i thought) could i have not got something lined up in there it just went right back in.? i watched the linkage and it does move fully but dont know whats going on inside.

kinda bummed about having to get a different front axle just to get disc brakes but i cant keep these drums on there and it needs power brakes i do not remeber this type of set up being so hard to stop..lol

Once i find out whats wrong (if its not somthing i did) i might be getting ahold of you for some parts.

It has 3:73s in it and what iam going to keep in it, ordering a locker and new gears for the rear tomorrow as the rear end is whining pretty bad.

I have a couple nice matched sets of Dana 44 12 bolt combos with 3.73s that I could make you a good deal on..I'm only about 80 miles north of you.

Well whats a good deal.? and does the 12 bolt have a locker in it.? i take it they will bolt right in and be good to go , what year are they.

I have a nice pair that I took out of a 72 1/2 ton, they will bolt right in but I would replace the brakes on the front and have the rotors turned..has fairly new lockouts. 3.73 gears but no locker. 250.00 for the pair

Yeah i will clean them up paint and install knew pads and turn the rotors, ad a locker to the rear and install them with a 2.5" lift kit at the same time so i can clear 33s with know issuse.

power brake booster, can i just get one for a 70-72 and bolt it straight on or will I have to do some mods to get it to fit.? anyone know.

Get a booster, master cylinder and prop valve from a 71-72 3/4 ton and its pretty much a bolt in..youll have to bend and run some new hard lines but its a simple swap.

Just wanted to say thanks to BLAZERMAN (Rob) for the front and rear Diffs and it was nice meating you.
Sure do have a nice 72 K10 its very sharp.

going to order some parts Monday and if all goes well i will get the rear diff in next weekend
