70 and 72 axle interchangability

I have a 70 gmc with a 12 bolt factory rearend. I am switching over to 5 lug and i know i can buy aftermarket axles or have mine slugged and drilled for 5 lug. But i have a 72 rear end sitting at a friends house and was wondering if i could just pull the axles out of it and slide them into my housing and carrier.

Has anyone done this or know of any problems with this.

thanks

Measure to see if you have the longer housing. Sometime in 1970 gm changed. some will interchange.

I've had 4 1970 trucks and they all had the same rearend as a 71 and 72.

any good machine shop can slug and redrill your old axles. Last time i had it done i think it was about 30 per axle.
