Ditch the electric fuel pump or keep it?
My truck has a Holley EFP mounted on the frame rail and while it seems to work just fine, it's very loud and it bugs me. I normally wouldn't care but I have a '66 Mustang that had an electric fuel pump when I bought it and I had quite a bit of trouble with it before we figured out it was mounted too high with respect to the gas tank. I went back to a manual on that car and I've never had another problem.
I'm not looking to spend money in places I don't have to but should I go back to a manual pump? BTW, I searched and didn't find much and that's why I'm asking. Sorry if I cluttered up the board with something that's been discussed before. |

There's no arguing a manual pump is quieter and they seem to last for years and years and are available everywhere.

The noise has always been an issue with many fuel pumps. A lot of it depends on how the pump is mounted to the frame. Does it have any type of rubber or soft material isolation to keep the pulses from transmitting themselves to the frame. Have you considered putting a cover over the pump to insulate it from the outside to control the noise? There are pluses and minuses for either pump design.

When I moved the tank to the rear, I had to install an electric pump due to vapor locking. The manual pump was not happy sucking fuel that far. Try the manual, if it vapor locks, reinstall the electric.

It has rubber between the frame and the pump. I still have the factory tank so I'm hoping that a manual won't have any issues. I may put this one down the list but I think eventually I'll get the electric out of there.

suburbans have gastanks further back than a 1/2 3/4ton pickup and they have worked well on mechanical pumps for well over 40years with no vapor lock issues// sort of makes you think??

I had same problems with mechanical pump. Switched to Mallory 140 which is dead quiet, installed return line and no more issues. In my case, it's a ****ty California gas with 10% alcohol in it. Few years back I never had these problems.

Ditch it, nothing wrong with original pumps, very reliable and quiet less electric junk to mess up.
