paint code/SPID convention help
Paint Code 463 (on a 72 chev C20) - before you read any further, what is that code for?
------- Ok, now the rest of my question... On the SPID, the code is "463 White & Ochre" - written just like that. Is 463 a two tone code - and if so, is it white top only or white top with white middle panel between the upper/lower belts? Reason I'm asking is this - I always thought "White & Ochre" would have been the nomenclature for a white top/solid ochre body (as in the first pic), whereas "White/Ochre/White/Ochre" would have been listed for a white top and mid panel two tone truck (as in the 2nd pic)... I realize there's no guarantee that chevy always followed the same paint color combo naming convention, but seems they were fairly consistent about the white/ochre/white/ochre convention when it was a white mid-section truck... ?? Lookin at a truck with similar paint to 2nd pic, but the SPID says "463 White & Ochre" - so I'm curious if perhaps the mid-body white was added after the truck left the factory by someone along the way through the years, etc.... I have seen some white overspray indications that might hint at this idea but the owner mentioned it's only touched up and paint appears as it originally left factory (as far as he knows, he's not the original owner, but he is the 2nd - and the truck is pretty original). Interested in your thoughts on this - thanks all! |

Re: paint code/SPID convention help
. . . .
My 70 C-10 was originally blue with a white roof only, as seen in the first picture below. The second picture shows the original SPID. . . . . |

Re: paint code/SPID convention help
I'm thinking 463 is w/o/w/o and 590 is w/o/w and 536 is w/o... As far as the descriptions go, they varied alot from year to year and from plant to plant.

Re: paint code/SPID convention help
excellent info gents, thanks so much.
Steve, yours adds to my theory, but Ledzepp, yours truly proves the owner might be 100% correct in this case. Perfect example. Thanks again guys, that's a big help. |

Re: paint code/SPID convention help
Bruce has it right. 463 is the Deluxe Two-Tone with the white roof and white between the upper and lower bodyside moldings. 590 is the Custom Two-Tone with the white roof and white below the lower body side molding. 536 is the Conventional Two-Tone with the white roof only. The SPID description varies between plants. Only the code matters, it is specific.

Re: paint code/SPID convention help
I know this is reviving an older thread, but what would paint code 557 be? Would that be the "4-tone" style with the Medium Olive roof and stripe, or just the Medium Olive roof?

Re: paint code/SPID convention help
Just like it say there on the SPID med olive roof (504) and dark olive (506) body color including interior. The deluxe two-tone paint codes (with the white sides) were the 400 series and as far as I have found were white only on Chevys.
So it will look like a solid paint dark olive Cheyenne Super with all the trim plus a med. olive roof. Sounds like a nice looking and well equipped truck.

Re: paint code/SPID convention help
4-tone is funny. But no matter where or how much of one or the other color it's still 2-tone. There are only two tones (colors). And the rest is the style, deluxe, custom, or conventional. Chrysler was big on the tri-tones in the '70s. I can't think of any quad-tones... from factory!

Re: paint code/SPID convention help
So would the paint code for my dark blue 71 be 538, if I’m looking at the chart right.
Thanks Keith

Re: paint code/SPID convention help
71 white over dark blue in conventional two tone is code 572. 538 was for 67-70 only I believe.

Re: paint code/SPID convention help
Thanks! The PO painted it dark blue so the spid is wrong, came out of the factory medium blue/white. I found these paint code charts for 72 which is how I came up with the 538

Re: paint code/SPID convention help
What is the paint code on your SPID hdff?
The primary color (2169) for the 538 two tone code you're looking at in the 72 paint code reference page was only available in 67-70 (Ditzler 2169 = 67-70 RPO 508 Dark Blue Poly). I think this is what may be throwing you off. 72 Dark Blue is RPO 523 (Mariner Blue) - and its conventional two-tone code is 572. Despite what the 72 chart shows, 508 Dark Blue Poly was not available in 1971 or 1972 (nor was its conventional two-tone code of 538). If your truck came from the factory as conventional two tone Medium Blue (aka Hawaiian Blue), the SPID RPO would be 542. |

542 is what I show on the spid, but I want to replace the spid with a new one and want to update it with the new color.. the PO painted it dark blue metallic with a white top.. he told me dark blue was a factory color for ‘71 and I have found it on the internet.. I just need to know what code would be for dark blue/white
