Hood braces? Mine are missing
I noticed my hood braces are not there, does anyone sell them? Can I make them? Any pics of where they attach to?

Re: Hood braces? Mine are missing
I don't think they sell them aftermarket. I had one missing that I didn't notice until after the hood was painted. I just made one. It was pretty straight forward but I did have the one on the other side to use as a template. The trickest part was be getting the tabs of the brace at the correct angle but it was not bad at all. give it a try.

Re: Hood braces? Mine are missing
If its for a 58 I have mine apart and can get you some photos and measurements. Are you just missing the one in the center that goes from the latch to the back cross brace and the round x brace? Those are the only ones that are bolted in. The other main ones are held with big rivet to the sides of the hood.

Re: Hood braces? Mine are missing
Here is a photo of the removal braces, convieniently painted black to contast with the primed hood! The top piece holds the latch. the long center one runs from the hoot latch at the front brace to the back brace. It has a close tight fit to the hood metal with a heavy webbing like material isolator. It keeps the hood metal from oil canning, vibrating and bending. The cross bolts to the front and back braces, it keeps the hood square when you open and close it so it does not get sprung. the two holes on either side of the wide portion of the bottom (closest to firewall) brace are for the hood hinges. You could make the center and cross braces. you will need to find the latch brace, it would be difficult to get it right (3 different angles) so the latch works ok (my opinon).

Re: Hood braces? Mine are missing
Anyone know why those rods are crooked like they are? When I got my truck I thought they were bent and was going to straighten them but then I started seeing pics here on the forum and realized they are all like that.

I have the center brace intact still, I need the two round rods.

Re: Hood braces? Mine are missing
Russ - I always wondered and assumed it was to miss the oil bath air cleaner? Tex, those would be easy to fabricate out of some round rod with a piece of shaped flat bar welded to the ends. The factory ones are welded together where they cross. The factory rod is 3/8" diameter steel. The material and time would be less than the gas and time to find them!

Re: Hood braces? Mine are missing
If I don't find them I will end up making them. They would have to be separated to ship anyway. I'll go look for material tomorrow.

Re: Hood braces? Mine are missing
Thanks for clearing that up, Dave and Orrie. My truck originally had a six so that's why mine are crooked.

Re: Hood braces? Mine are missing
It was also a way to adjust the hood to keep it square, they had a big tool with a long arm to bend those to adjust the hood corners, not all are bent in the same place. The one in front of the radiator is the same way.

Re: Hood braces? Mine are missing
I can see that, sort of like turnbuckle cross bracing on fence gates to keep them square over time.

Re: Hood braces? Mine are missing
This is NOT my truck (I wish it were!). It's a '58 Short Fleetside that is BEOOOTIFUL. It is/was for sale and a member on this board from Australia asked me to check it out for him. I did, but I don't know if he ever bought it or not.
Anyway, apologies for the iPhone photo but you can see that the builder used steel rod and turn buckles. Not exactly my taste but it does accomplish the goal of adjustibility and look good...I guess. Before anyone asks, he sprayed an undercoating under the hood before the truck was painted. |

Checked, nothing there that's new. Doesn't say my box is full...though I do have some saved.

Re: Hood braces? Mine are missing
I just sent you an email with photos, but in case anyone else wants to see my shroud here are the few photos I have on my work computer (apologies for the iPhone photos and the inner fenders have been refinished since these pix were taken):
You can't see the mounting flange and of course you can't tell the dimension, but I'll upload a photo of that later tonight. |

Re: Hood braces? Mine are missing
I'm missing the center brace also! I'm looking for the latch part that bolts in the hood. Anybody sell it? Or have one?
