Where can I get a good rear end for A 62'

I have a 62' with a 350 in it right now i plan on getting a new transmission sometime and want to change the rear gears but I dont know that much about ratios and i dont know if I can just change the gears out or if i will have to get a whole new rear end. I want something that will make my truck badass. I dont care if its out of a car at the junkyard i just would like to know what car or where i could find a decent rear end?

theres a stock 61 shortbed with a stock rearend in it at merced pick n pull. Only a 60-62 will fit right I think...

Is your truck a Chevy or GMC? A C10 or C20? I assume you are looking for higher gears for lower cruising rpm's?

I have a Chevy c10 and I don't know how it works I may need to get a new transmission as well but I'm only pushing 80 miles an hour I mean I want something that I can cruise around in but at the same time if some piece of crap Honda pulls up to me and wants to race I know I'll at least put up a challenge. Does that kind of give u a better idea?

A '62 Chevy C10 is most likely going to have a Eaton HO32 differential. The most common gear ratio in those is 3.90. There used to be 3.36 gears available for those differentials, but I don't think they are available any longer. A fairly good all around rear gear is the 3.42 gears. To be able to have those gears you will need to change the entire differential to either a '63-'82 truck 12 bolt, or a '80-'87 truck 8.5" 10 bolt. The late '70 to '87 differentials are going to be 1.5" wider than your current differential. and of course the '71 and up C10's will have the 5x5 wheel bolt pattern. Regardless of which differential you choose, there will be a certain amount of cutting, welding and fabrication involved. You can also go one step further and install an overdrive trans for even more of a decrease in highway rpm's. If you feel the need for increased accelleration, just pull it down a gear or two.

So if I went with a later rear end say like 70's to 80's I would have to weld in the. Ew gear box, or if I find a complete rear end from like a late 70's truck I couldn't just swap it out? I mean grated I know it won't line up with the old rear end and I may have to get a new drive shaft but is there no way just to swap it out?

I have an 8.2 rear end out of an S-10 (I think it has 3.08 gear) that you can have for $10 (just diesel money to Oceanside). I'm down your way several times a month since my racing partner and MachineTech Racing Engines are in Oceanside (where I do a lot of my machine work).

The housing width is 54.25" with the axle stand out, it is just shy of 60", so it should fit nicely, especially if you want to fit a wider and deeper wheel combo. I acquired it to use on a customer C-10 project, but he sold it before we could use it.

the 8.2 is not a "bolt-in" unless vin63 has already modified it.

Just for info Yukon gear still make the ho-32 3.38 ring and pinion.
