chevy 350 bogging down
yesterday my 350 71 corvette engine was running just fine in my 67 p/u. this morning, I fired it up and it ran rough, bogged down and died and would only start if I held the accelerator to the floor for a dozen or so cranks.
checked and cleaned plugs, no leaks in my 3 month old edelbrock 650 carb, fresh non-ethanol gas, no changes to idle or dist. running points on it. Any ideas cuz I'm stumped....

Re: chevy 350 bogging down
oh, it will idle ok for a few minutes then slowly bog down and die. It's not a sudden thing, just takes about a minute for it to do it. Also, when I'm driving it will hitch if I let off the gas in 2nd.

Re: chevy 350 bogging down
Trash in your needle and seat. Fire it up and tap the carb beside the fuel inlet with the end of a big screwdriver. That might clear it out. Another trick is to squeeze off the fuel coming in on your fuel line if you have a short length of rubber line somewhere between the fuel pump and the carb. Let the pressure go and it might flush out the needle/seat.

Re: chevy 350 bogging down
I bought the carb new and only been driving it for about 3 months. Have in line fuel filter and in tank filter. They clog up that quick? I'll give it a try though.
thanks

Re: chevy 350 bogging down
tried that. Did it 3-4 times with no change. Idles fine while it's cold. Stumbles when you give it some gas. Let it drop back to idle and it'll hold for about 30 seconds then continues to drop to stall.

Re: chevy 350 bogging down
All it takes is a sliver of a piece of junk smaller than a tiny needle to screw up the seal in the needle/seat.

Re: chevy 350 bogging down
Pull the fuel line off the carb. Get someone to crank it over and see how much fuel squirts into a pail. Could be fuel pump crapped out.

Re: chevy 350 bogging down
Sound like it might be something stuck in the choke. Once your engine warms up and and the choke is supposed to be releasing, instead it sounds like it is stuck shut.

Re: chevy 350 bogging down
It has a manual choke which I disconnected the choke pull from the carb. I'll check these things when I get home tonight. Keep the possibilities coming though!

Re: chevy 350 bogging down
My '69 GMC has a 350 with a similar problem. My engine will run great, and then all of a sudden it will only idle fine, but will die when any attempt is made to accelerate.
Mine is caused due to crap in the fuel tank (rust and sediment from sitting for years) that keeps finding its way to the filter at the inlet of the Q-jet. I need to replace the tank to fix the problem, but in the meantime, I remove the filter, put a new one in and all is good.

Re: chevy 350 bogging down
Its starving for fuel somewhere in the supply. Check the pump, filter, line, and carb. It also sounded like the choke to me but if its been removed then I would suggest pump.
Will it run alright when you disconnect the fuel line and pour a small amount directly into the carb? |

Re: chevy 350 bogging down
fuel line and filter are good. Pump is running well (Manual). Carb is only 3 mo's old and I cleaned it well with carb cleaner. tweaked the idle a little higher and it's holding idle and running OK. Still kinda rough but at least it's not dying. will run it this week back and forth to work to see how it does. will post results. thanks
