Question Frame Cleanup

So what is the best way to cleanup the frames on our trucks? And I mean to remove the rust. And what is the best stuff to put on after the frame has been cleaned up?

Re: Frame Cleanup

I went and bought a wire wheel and one of those wheels that is kinda like stiff plastic on there its some kind of abrasive that ground down the rust.. I was going to coat with POR15 but went with rustoleum instead

That's what I figured, how did the rustoleum work out for you? And what exactly was the product you used?

The rust looks to be in layers. Like it is through the frame

Re: Frame Cleanup

Oh yeah, that rust is nothing, up here in Indiana if you can't see through it your frame is good.

Well alrighty then, I guess I wont whine about rust anymore. For stuff that Im not that concerned about looks wise I use rustoleum out of the can, brushed on with cheapo sponge brushes.

For getting it off same as everyone else. Wire wheel/ and those funny looking abrasive pads. By the looks of those pics I would forget the safety googles and wear a face sheild.

Re: Frame Cleanup

I used wire wheels, 50 grit on an angle grinder and patched where I had to. Then I used a "lock down" rattle can primer, I used a product called Zero rust, and Kimball Midwest "rust master" primer. Then I used Kimball midwest Gloss Black rattle can. It looks really good sitting in the shop. Have no Idea how it will hold up, but it's way better than it was.

Forgot needlegun loud but effective

Re: Frame Cleanup

Needle gun, sandblaster, grinder, whatever works. Some of the rust on my old truck just got polished with a wire wheel. (needle gun was a very good investment.) I started with epoxy primer when it was cleaned up, finished with a qt of Rustoleum brushed on. The Rustoleum held up fairly good, and very easy to touch up.

I didn't have enough epoxy to finish, and wasn't going to order more for an old plow truck.

I'm kinda like duct tape- no real purpose, but handy to have around.

Re: Frame Cleanup

wire wheel is good, but can't get too all the places.....Sandblast is better but make a mess, but i did it in driveway....sweep up,screen and an reuse... I have been reusing the same materials forever now..

I am so surprised how well the sandblast gets the metal so clean. ...will post pics soon.. I could not achieve the results with the grinder and wire wheel for some reason...

Epoxy is the best primer after its all cleaned up IMO. then u can use what ever you like to finish...

Re: Frame Cleanup

I do these at work on Toyota frames, if there are no holes they get treated(undercoated). I has a 4000 psi pressure washer with a nice nozzle that gets them very clean. It`s about as close to being blasted as I think you can get. You might look into a high powered pressure washer if no sand blaster is avail.
