Rear frame fuel tank install questions
I am trying to gather parts for my truck to put a tank behind the rear frame rails and get the tank out of the cab. I have done some digging but have not found any posts that go through the instalation of the tank and what all i will need.
I plan on doing the rear marker light filler as seen here http://www.classicheartbeat.com/mark...t_gas_door.htm, so i have that much decided. i need a tank that will fit and look decent. I am worried that the 40 gallon burb tank wont fit with my exhaust the way it is. And it also seems like it will sit much too low? does anyone have any installed pictures? Would a different tank be a better idea? Is this the tank that most use if going with a suburban tank? http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Fuel-Tan...480f4b&vxp=mtr and finally, can anyone point me in the direction of the correct sending unit to use for a carbureted engine? I find a bunch with 4 outlets, but dont think those are correct. thanks in advance.

Re: Rear frame fuel tank install questions
anything that holds more than 16 gallons or so is going to hang low enough that you will see it. you are limited by length and width only place to add capacity is depth.

Re: Rear frame fuel tank install questions
Have you checked out early classic? They offer a stainless steal tank that fits our trucks great ( I have two) $700.00 but worth it IMO, call Stan or Mark and they will set you up all you will have to do is mount it&drive it! Cheers, Pat

Re: Rear frame fuel tank install questions
Thanks SunSoaked. i just picked up a 40gal burb tank from an 87. It should work great. Did you have to clearance the bed at all? Im wondering if i could mount it a couple inches higher if i notch the braces on the bottom of the bed. Just trying to not let it hang so low.

Re: Rear frame fuel tank install questions
I did not notch the bed rails, but it's as close to the bottom of the beds rails
(1/4 inch) as I can get it. You might gain another inch or two but I wouldn't want to give up the stiffining and make the bed flex or worse have that "popcan" effect. I dont mind being able to see the tank-no worse than a spare tire. I have a 2-3 inch lift, so I'm not worried about clearance either. My only fear is when I pull up to the pump and let loose with 40 gallons at todays prices! |

Re: Rear frame fuel tank install questions
I don't envy you for that, but I wish I could get more than 19 gallons under a lowered truck without it hanging so low I worry about ripping it open.

What are you using for fuel lines? And I too fear the fuel up. I figure 160 per fill up . And my Bigblock likes to drink, I'd say about 8MPG. That 160 ain't Gunna last long. Haha Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Rear frame fuel tank install questions
I installed a burb tank followed pretty much the way sun soaked did his, I too will have at least 4" lift so clearance is not an issue. I have pics that I have been compiling for my build thread when I start it.(the build thread that is) LOL

Re: Rear frame fuel tank install questions
forgot to add this, I thought about the tank to bed clearance issue, I don't think that I will go this route but you could go for a body lift and gain a couple inches and raise it that way, just a thought??

Re: Rear frame fuel tank install questions
I here ya I don't care for the body lifts either.I went for the burb tank for the capacity, I hate being out and about and worry about having enough fuel to do whatever I want to.

Sunsoaked, Not trying to hijack the thread, but could you give me a quick measurement from the bottom of the frame rail to the bottom of the tank? I am looking to do this swap myself but i have a 2wd truck and i don't want to lift it. I might use the 31 gallon blazer tank instead which, if i recall correctly, is the same dimensions except it is an inch or two shallower. |
