Post Can you believe it? Got pull over today

Got a verbal warning about my tire size and the need to have mud flaps on my truck. Oh well, I went longer than I thought I would before getting pulled over. Just ordered some semi flaps which I'll cut to fit. Man it's gonna look ugly!

lol, he did seem concerned for my paint, NOT! At least he didn't write me up and let me go with a verbal.

Fast, yes and no. My original plan was to replace the grill and headlight bezels with painted but now I'm thinking it would be too much. I am getting rid of the windshield and back window trim, emblems, mirrors, chrome front bumper and anything else chrome (maybe not the door handles) and going with painted. I'm sure I will leave the grill loops and headlight bezels the way they are just to offset everything else that will be painted. I would still like to pick up a painted set of grill and headlights just so I can see what it would look like.

That is bullsh*t, cops are so iffy. In AZ they have a udflap law for ANY lifted truck. Hell, you see newer trucks running around with all their 6" lifts and 35's and some running 38's and 40's with no mudflaps and I know a few of these guys. NONE of them has ever been pulled over for mudflaps. BTW, one of the guys owns a 00 Super Duty crew cab with an 11" lift and 38.5's with duals in the rear that stick out past the dually fender, never been pulled over.

My 72 and 76 C20's were HUGE cop magnets. They'd pull me over just because I looked like cheap white trash up to no good (which I was, of course lol), not for anything I actually did.
Cases in point: Between the two trucks, I was probably pulled over 16 times in the last 1 1/2 years, every single one for lame-o reasons like "improperly mounted rear license plate," "exhaust is too loud," etc. Didn't get a single ticket for any of them. I've been pulled over 3 times in my dad's 1994 Dodge Spirit, and gotten a ticket every time. Just shows there's a good bit of law enforcement discrimination against guys in old ugly trucks

Before you put mudflaps on make sure there is a law or statue in the books. Here in Alabama the headlamps must be below 54" off the ground. Did he measure? I'm not sure of your state law. Same thing with tire size, check for sure, ask a law enforecement officer to show you in the law book. I'm one of those "iffy" state troopers. By the way your truck looks awesome!

I think this cop should go bust some drug dealers and let normal law abiding citizens and their vehicles alone.

I got pulled over once because I had fuzzy dice hanging from my mirror! Can you believe that?

He never noticed that I had a burned out brake light and that I wasn't wearing my seat belt. (lucky for me but odd) Those fuzzy dice was what he was after!!!

What a world we live in huh?

Some cops are out to throw their weight around, and some are there genuinely intending to help the public. I've had cops stop me for completely stupid things and be jerks about it, and I've had cops stop me for things they should stop me for and be cool about it.

You gotta see why mudflaps are necessary. I'd be one pissed MoFo if I was following someone with tires sticking out like that and they threw a rock up at my pickup.

conman, I have checked Oregon law on tire size (I did this before I lifted the truck) and it does state that no part of the tire can extend beyond the width of the body (most cops where I come from could care less if an inch or so is hangin out there) and the rear part of the tires must be covered by a mud guard or flap no higher than 20" from the ground on a level surface. There is not currently a headlight height law in Oregon but they are trying to get one passed at 50". The top of my headlights are right at 48" so I'm covered there.

I have passed, drove beside and crossed paths with many cops since my lift and none have gave me any grief yet. This was an Evil Knivel (the only motorcycle cop we have in this small town) and he just wanted to make his point I guess. I assume that once I put the mud flaps on and they see that I have made an effort to cover some of that tire, I won't get stopped anymore. If they still aren't happy with it or get a bug up there butt to harass me, then I'll have to do what I don't want to do and that is put fender flares on the truck. Bushwacker makes a set for our trucks but anything other than the stock body style is ugly in my opinion.

bobs409, I have a friend that got wrote up for fuzzy dice (cop was being a jerk) wrote him for obstruction of view.

ckhd, you summed it up exactly!

I have to say I hate those fuzzy dice too, why hang something that can obstruct your view. I think most bikers would agree on that one, especially cops on motorcycles!
As far as wide tires, we all know the rules before we put our tires on soooo...?

I think the main reason for pulling you over is the possibility of rocks and debris flying off and hitting someone else's vehicle. Hell, some of those big knobblys can pick up and hold onto a rock almost as big as your fist...until you hit the highway, of course.

I agree Southpa, he has to be concerned with damage I may cause and safety for others. He was very cool about it, he didn't write me and let me go on my word I would install flaps.
