Finally Got My K5!

So I've been lurking around the forum for a few years now. I actually joined and posted pics of a 71 Blazer I was considering buying back in 2010. But based on the blazers location, condition, and most importantly the feedback I got from you guys on here, I passed on it.

So life happens for a couple years, I continue to look occasionally on CL and look for Blazer/Jimmys. Then one day a few weeks ago I decide to call about a blazer that is an hour away and priced right. Still not thinking I'm gonna drop the cash I call just to ask some questions. Long story short I had something he wanted and we ended up making a deal.

So it begins.....I finally got my 72 K5 this past weekend. And it cost me........ a 2003 Honda Foreman!

More info & pics to come!

Sweet K5! I just got another one myself. I picked up a 1975 with a 4 speed and 8 lugs. What does yours have in it?

Re: Finally Got My K5!

Title actually reads 1972 GMC....so I guess that makes this a Jimmy. Still haven't went through everything yet to confirm but here's what I was told.

Motor is 350 bored .30 over makes it a 355 (Not running...PO turned it over with some gas in the carb but it was white smoking like crazy!) I'm cutting my mechanical teeth on this thing so I'll be posting plenty more on this to figure out how much rebuilding it will take to get it running.

Transmission is a "Bulldog" SM465 4 Speed

Transfer Case - He was unsure of the transfer case, he mentioned Dana 20 - I'm hoping for the NP205 once I clean it up and get some numbers off of it.

Stock 12 Bolt Axles
4:56 Gears

Re: Finally Got My K5!

Easy to tell the difference between a d20 and a np205. Dana20 has two shift rods sticking out the back of the case. My 70 K5 has the 20 in it, but not for long, a np205 is waiting to go in!

Re: Finally Got My K5!

Regarding the white smoke, I've asked a few people who have more mechanical knowledge than I do but I've got mixed responses some say oil, some say coolant. Did a search on this forum and found a thread that had the following:

Re: White Smoke

"Smoking from an engine can be diagnosed by the old school methods. Blue smoke is oil-related. Black smoke is fuel-related. White smoke is water-related."

Is this a pretty good rule of thumb? This truck has been sitting in a barn for the last 2 years so I think I need to go through everything. But any advice on where to start?

Re: Finally Got My K5!

Possibly a head gasket leak. Doubt its a cracked head but you never know. Blue smoke is typically oil blow by.

Re: Finally Got My K5!

Thanks for the input briank. I'll tear into soon and see if its a head gasket or more.

I got the interior cleaned out tonight, lots of trash from the mice that made this thing home while it sat in the PO's barn for the last 2 years. I also pulled out all the rubber mat flooring that covered from firewall to rear seat. I didn't like what I found! More rust than I thought. Not shocked but of course I was hoping for the best. Oh well.... eventually it will all get fixed!

I also snapped a picture of the transfer case...pretty sure it's the NP205 based on what you told me Swyfor5? Am I correct?

Re: Finally Got My K5!

I heard the same.
Blue is engine oil.
Black is rich fuel.
White is steam or could possibly be tranny fluid.
Smell it. does it smell like burning oil or antifreeze.
Put your hand over the tail pipe and check for water.-- Anti freeze.

Re: Finally Got My K5!

Oil smoke also smells like burned oil, kind of acrid. Smoke from antifreeze smells kind of sweet, almost like maple syrup. Smoke from fuel smells like your old lawn mower.
