HELP!! Is this rear end posi? See pics..
Looking at a rear end I've found locally for sale. Opened it up today and took some pics. Can anyone tell me by looking if this is a posi unit?

Thanks guys! That do you think this is worth? Guy is asking $325.00. What would you all offer? It's complete drum to drum, clean and painted. Brakes probably need redone.

2.73-3.08 probably wouldnt be worth that much. i would pay a pretty penny for a 3.42 posi

not a big fan of those.. they like to blow up especially if you like to do burnouts n gte sideways etc.

Re: HELP!! Is this rear end posi? See pics..
That's a gov-lock. Not quite a posi, but not quite a good locker either. It's designed to lock the diff if one wheel gets to spinning faster than the other. The trouble is that it takes some speed for this to occur, making the locking action violent and only suitable for snow and shallow mud.

Re: HELP!! Is this rear end posi? See pics..
I have heard a lot of bad things about these but have never had a problem with mine. I installed it 5 years ago in my CCSB with a Cummins and a 4l80. Still holding up just fine! I would have prefered an Eaton Spring type posi but the gov lock is what was available when I was doing it.

Re: HELP!! Is this rear end posi? See pics..
GM used them for a lot of years. Must be some reason they didn't switch back to the spring type. That being said I would still prefer the Eaton spring type but I haven't had any problems with my Gov Lock. I would think any rearend could lock up if it is abused.

Re: HELP!! Is this rear end posi? See pics..
Thanks for the info all..so I only have one opinion on what the rear end is worth. Anyone else? I think I'm going to make an offer on it mainly bc it would be a good upgrade for me. I think my current gears are 2.somthing... This one has 3.42.

Re: HELP!! Is this rear end posi? See pics..
thats what i call a coo coo clock... they are garbage.. i wouldnt pay any more than $100.... my recommendation if you need a posi is to spend the money and get a clutch type... those are very weak and cannot take any shockloading or abuse.

Re: HELP!! Is this rear end posi? See pics..
Since it has the gears you want , get it cheap and look around for a clutch posi out of a camaro , nova , any 8.5 rear end and throw it in there .

Re: HELP!! Is this rear end posi? See pics..
It is worth the $325 easy. I sell a lot of posi carriers and never get less than $175-200. As a complete rearend you just have to decide what it is worth to you. Be sure to run the right limited slip gear oil or you will have problems!

Re: HELP!! Is this rear end posi? See pics..
As mentioned, it is NOT a posi, but it is a Gov-Lock Eaton G80 automatic locker. They work good..for a while, then they grenade on you, and have been known to send shrapnel through the diff cover...even the bed, and possibly even take out the transmission due to the shock when it goes. It is an ok locker in the 14SF and 14FF axles, but a ticking time bomb in the 10 bolt.
As far as worth, if it is a 10 bolt axle, around here $100 tops, $150 if it is a newer disc brake axle.

Re: HELP!! Is this rear end posi? See pics..
I'd agree on the $100-$150 price range if it's a 10 bolt.
In our salvage yard, any axle is $100 so that's what I base it off of. I picked up 14SF with open gears. I specifically looked for an open differential rather than the Gov-Loc rear end. $325 is pretty steep for a 10 Bolt in my opinion. Unless it's been re-built....then it may be worth the extra cash. I'll sell you my 10 bolt with open, 3.73 gears for $200.

Re: HELP!! Is this rear end posi? See pics..
If it is a 10 bolt I wouldn't waste my time putting it in if it was given to me. If a 14 bolt, maybe $250 with gear, progressing for a better gear for my purpose. The 3.42 may be just what you want so you might pay more. Make sure you know depending on the year the WMS to WMS is different for 2 and 4 wheel drives.

Re: HELP!! Is this rear end posi? See pics..
Thanks for the input! I think I will try to buy it cheap and keep my old rear to build up in case I have problems. I don't abuse or do donuts and burnouts. I mainly want the 3.42 gears so i have a little better acceration, and I can actually use overdrive without my engine chugging around town.

Re: HELP!! Is this rear end posi? See pics..
I have a G80 in my 04 Z71, works awesome in the snow or off road. Not made for burn outs and wide open throttle fun.
High rpm it's designed to open up and go back to single wheel operation. Watch the video posted above . Desert |
