Smile z-bar anywere? 69 c-20

Hi everybody, i just joined yesterday. I bought a truck about two weeks ago and the clutch pedal is not the correct set up, the z-bar broke , they welded it but wrong. So im looking for a z-bar bracket, also the pedal does not release back up, does anyone have a picture of the clutch pedal and spring? Mine has a big spring under that does nothing

Re: z-bar anywere? 69 c-20

sorry i don't, but i just bought a pedal assembly that has that huse spring, my other truck doesn't, i don't really know its purpose, cause this is the first time i've seen one, and the other truck works great without that big spring. I think it just holds the pedal all the way up, doesn't kinda useless.

Re: z-bar anywere? 69 c-20

Here this picture should help some. Now on you Z bar and related parts, we need to know what you have. Clutch linkage, crossmembers amd mounts are engine family specific on these trucks. Don't mind helping but we can't help effectively by guessing. BTW: That big spring keeps the linkage preloaded.

This a link to a thread we just had on publications that should be a part of your toolbox.

Re: z-bar anywere? 69 c-20

Thanks for the picture, that really helps, these guys welded a metal strip to one end of the spring as well, so Ima need to look were it connects and cut it off...and for the z bar , my truck is a v8 350..do all v8 have the same bracket. It's 2wd not 4x4

I'll try to post pictures very soon

Re: z-bar anywere? 69 c-20

I'm confused by this picture, this pedal has a hole in it about hlaf way, there is a stud that goes in there and a big ass spring connects from there to the mounting bracket. I have two trucks that have this big spring and one that doesn't, how come? Hope i'm not changing the subject, but wondering if i'm missing it on the one truck and wondering why its not in the picture. Might be something you need to know also. You mentioned a spring that seems to do nothing.
I couldn't find a good picture but here is one and you can see the big ass spring kinda

Re: z-bar anywere? 69 c-20

IIRC The big spring is an assist spring found on HD clutch vehicles. Can't say for sure though.....

Yeah. My '71 GMC Jimmy 4x4 has the big spring. My '68 C/10 Stepside doesn't. Both have an SM 465 tranny.

the two trucks that have the spring are 4x4 the other truck is a conversion and we got the pedal assembly from who knows where. Guess you could remove it without any problems then, do they use a different clutch for a 4x4, thought everything would be the same whether 4x4 or 2wd sm465. All it seems to do is hold the pedal up and put a little help down once you get to the right point, might help make the pedal feel easier i guess.

Re: z-bar anywere? 69 c-20

My truck has the spring its 2wd though, the problem is that someone welded a rod and washer to the bottom so it don't function properly, looks just like this one 2 not like the diagram, just need to correct mine..

In both my cases I have an 11" flywheel and a Centerforce II clutch. The '71 Jimmy has a 350 V8, SM465/NP205. The pickup has a 292 L6, SM465 and is 4x2.
I heard GM went to a 12" flywheel in 1972 for 4x4s. I'm doing OK with the 11".

Victor: I would search junkyards for the V8 Z-Bar [the L6 is different] I'm not sure if any vendors stock them anymore. The V8 engine-side ball stud is available. It bolts directly into a hole machined in the block. Don't know if this is a K/5-only style. I know on some V8s, a strap iron (into which is pressed a ball stud) gets bolted on to the block. [L6s use this type, too, but they are different.]

Re: z-bar anywere? 69 c-20

I have been struggling with the issue of the z-bar and the clutch linkages. I have a 396 that I thought at first glance the z-bar stud was screwed into the block, after further investigation there is a steel bracket that is bolted to the engine block. The stud is threaded into that bracket. My stud broke along with the top clutch linkage. I have been able to replace the stud, but am having difficulty finding a clutch linkage. The symptoms were a slow clutch pedal return that I thought was the spring issue, turns out that when the stud broke that caused the top linkage to break. I will try to take some pictures today and post them.

Re: z-bar anywere? 69 c-20

Yeah, I have tried to ask vendors here about this in another post, no response.
I did find a vendor USA 1 Industries out of North Carolina that has this part and supposed to ship next week.
I did find the part listed in the LMC Catalog, but they claim it is only for a 250 (see the first picture line #6). Does anyone know if these rods are all the same?
The second picture is the damage to the rod and the stud that was screwed into the bracket that attaches to the engine block.

That first (red outline) picture is for the DD series trucks, the forward control stepvans and they are very different from the pickups.

Know, NO, but I did extract some part numbers (3889915 and 3907877 ) that indicate cross over on early trucks. Here is a clip compilation from the Parts Catalog.

Re: z-bar anywere? 69 c-20

Excuse my ignorance, what is DD?
And to be clear this rod that I need is the one that goes through the firewall.
If USA 1 Industries doesn't work, any other suggestions to get this part?
I have called around and have been to one junk yard, these trucks have been picked over not much left.

Re: z-bar anywere? 69 c-20

Here is a picture of the DD series truck/chassis. The rod numbers I believe are the down rod from the clutch pedal arm to the z-bar through the floor.
There are a number of vendors that may or may not see a WTB ad but it would be worth putting up. I am sure countless numbers of these have been thrown away after doing an auto trans. conversion. Specific source members might be budnikguy, jerimaih king, leddzepp, sharpie, teeitup, t korinek, brian atkinson or richard2717. There very well may be some local vendors to you. Go through the parts classifieds to find their listings and contact info.
Have you tried or thought about fixing yours? If the ends are a little bent straighten and sleeve the section welding as you go.

Thanks for the information. I may try to weld this piece. I think I will try a WTB first.
